Where'er the Lord is, there are they; In every heart that gives them room They light his altar every day,
Zeal to inflame and vice consume.
3 Soft as the plumes of Jesus' Dove They nurse the soul to heavenly love; The struggling spark of good within, Just smother'd in the strife of sin, They quicken to a timely glow, The pure flame spreading high and low. Say not that prayer and hope are o'er : Nay, blessed Spirit! but by thee The church's prayer finds wings to soar, The church's hope finds eyes to see.
4 Then, fainting soul, arise and sing, Mount, but be sober on the wing; Mount for heaven is won by prayer,
Be sober, for thou art not there. Till death the weary spirit free, Thy God has said, 'Tis good for thee To walk by faith and not by sight: Take it on trust a little while; Soon shalt thou read the mystery right In the full sunshine of his smile.
As many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.-Rom. viii. 14.
1 COME, gracious Spirit, heavenly Dove, With light and comfort from above: Be thou our Guardian, thou our Guide; O'er every thought and step preside.
2 The light of truth to us display, And make us know and love thy way; Plant holy fear in every heart, That we from God may ne'er depart.
3 Lead us to holiness, the road Which we must take to dwell with God: Lead us to Christ, the living way:
Nor let us from his pastures stray. 4 Lead us to God, our final rest,
To be with him for ever bless'd: Lead us to heaven, its bliss to share- Fulness of joy for ever there."
The glory of the Lord filled the house of God. [C.M. 2 Chron. v. 14.
1 SPIRIT Divine, attend our prayers, And make this house thy home; Descend with all thy gracious powers, O come, Great Spirit, come.
2 Come as the light; to us reveal Our emptiness and woe:
And lead us in those paths of life, Where all the righteous go.
3 Come as the fire, and purge our hearts Like sacrificial flame;
Let our whole soul an offering be To our Redeemer's name.
4 Come as the dew, and sweetly bless This consecrated hour;
May barrenness rejoice to own Thy fertilizing power.
5 Come as the dove, and spread thy wings, The wings of peaceful love;
And let thy church on earth become Bless'd as the church above.
6 Spirit Divine, attend our prayers; Make a lost world thy home; Descend with all thy gracious powers, O come, Great Spirit, come.
247 My soul cleaveth to the dust: quicken thou me. Ps. cxix. 25.
1 COME, Holy Spirit, heavenly Dove, With all thy quickening powers: Kindle a flame of sacred love
In these cold hearts of ours.
2 See how we grovel here below, Fond of these earthly toys; Our souls-how heavily they go To reach eternal joys!
3 In vain we tune our formal songs; In vain we strive to rise; Hosannas languish on our tongues, And our devotion dies.
4 Dear Lord, and shall we ever be In this poor dying state; Our love so faint, so cold to thee, And thine to us so great?
5 Come, Holy Spirit, heavenly. Dove, With all thy quickening powers; Come, shed abroad a Saviour's love, And that shall kindle ours.
248 The Spirit of God moved on the face of the
1 CREATOR Spirit, by whose aid
The world's foundations first were laid, Come, visit every humble mind; Come, pour thy joys on human kind; From sin and sorrow set us free, And make thy temples worthy thee.
2 O source of uncreated light, The Father's promised Paraclete, Thrice holy fount, thrice holy fire, Our hearts with heavenly love inspire: Come, and thy sacred unction bring To sanctify us while we sing.
3 Plenteous of grace, descend from high Rich in thy sevenfold energy; Make us eternal truths receive, And practise all that we believe; Give us thyself, that we may see The Father and the Son by thee. 4 Immortal honour, endless fame, Attend the Almighty Father's name; The Saviour Son be glorified, Who for lost man's redemption died; And equal adoration be,
Eternal Paraclete, to thee.
They were all filled with the Holy Ghost.
LORD GOD, the Holy Ghost, In this accepted hour,
As on the day of Pentecost, Descend in all thy power: We meet with one accord In our appointed place, And wait the promise of our Lord, The Spirit of all grace.
2 Like mighty rushing wind.
Upon the waves beneath,
Move with one impulse every mind,
One soul, one feeling, breathe:
The young, the old inspire
With wisdom from above;
And give us hearts and tongues of fire To pray, and praise, and love.
Spirit of light, explore
And chase our gloom away
With lustre shining more and more
Unto the perfect day;
Spirit of truth, be thou
In life and death our guide;
O Spirit of adoption, now May we be sanctified.'
He dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
COME, Holy Spirit, come;
Let thy bright beams arise; Dispel the sorrow from our minds, The darkness from our eyes.
Cheer our desponding hearts, Thou heavenly Paraclete; Give us to lie with humble hope At our Redeemer's feet.
Revive our drooping faith,
Our doubts and fears remove; And kindle in our breasts the flame Of never-dying love.
Convince us all of sin,
Then lead to Jesus' blood;
And to our wondering view reveal
The secret love of God.
"Tis thine to cleanse the heart, To sanctify the soul,
To pour fresh life in every part, And new create the whole.
Dwell therefore in our hearts, Our minds from bondage free;
Then we shall know, and praise, and love The Father, Son, and Thee.
Thou sendest forth thy Spirit; they are [THREE 73. created.-Ps. civ. 30.
1 COME, thou holy Paraclete, And from thy celestial seat Send thy light and brilliancy.
2 Father of the poor, draw near; Giver of all gifts, be here;
Come, the soul's true radiancy.
