3 0 strengthen me, that while I stand Firm on the Rock, and strong in thee, I may stretch out a loving hand

To wrestlers with the troubled sea. 4 O teach me, Lord, that I may teach The precious things thou dost impart ; And wing my words, that they may reach. The hidden depths of many a heart. 5 O give thine own sweet rest to me, That I may speak with soothing power A word in season, as from thee,

To weary ones in needful hour.

6 O fill me with thy fulness, Lord,
Until my very heart o'erflow

In kindling thought and glowing word,
Thy love to tell, thy praise to show.

7 O use me, Lord, use even me,

Just as thou wilt, and when, and where; Until thy blessèd face I see,

Thy rest, thy joy, thy glory share.

He careth for you.—1 Pet. v. 7.

1 QUIET, Lord, my froward heart,
Make me teachable and mild,
Upright, simple, free from art,
Make me as a weanèd child,
From distrust and envy free,
Pleased with all that pleases thee.
2 What thou shalt to-day provide
Let me as a child receive;
What to-morrow may betide,
Calmly to thy wisdom leave:
'Tis enough that thou wilt care;
Why should I the burden bear

[SIX 78

3 As a little child relies

On a care beyond his own,
Knows he's neither strong nor wise,
Fears to stir a step alone,
Let me thus with thee abide,
As my Father, Guard, and Guide.

4 Thus preserved from Satan's wiles,
Safe from dangers, free from fears,
May I live upon thy smiles,

Till the promised hour appears,
When the sons of God shall prove
All their Father's boundless love.*

He saith unto them, Follow me.
straightway left their nets, and followed
him.-Matt. iv. 19, 20.

1 JESUS calls us, o'er the tumult
Of our life's wild restless sea,
Day by day his sweet voice soundeth,
Saying, "Christian, follow me."

2 As, of old, Apostles heard it
By the Galilean lake,

Turn'd from home, and toil, and kindred,
Leaving all for his dear sake.

3 Jesus calls us-from the worship
Of the vain world's golden store,
From each idol that would keep us-
Saying, "Christian, love me more.

4 In our joys and in our sorrows,

[ocr errors]

Days of toil and hours of ease,
Still he calls, in cares and pleasures,
"Christian, love me more than these."

5 Jesus calls us. By thy mercies,
Saviour, may we hear thy call,
Give our hearts to thy obedience,
Serve and love thee, best of all."

Be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his
might.-Eph. vi. 10.

SOLDIERS of Christ, arise,

And put your armour on;

[S.M.

Strong in the strength which God supplies,
Through his eternal Son.

Strong in the Lord of hosts,

And in his mighty power;

Who in the strength of Jesus trusts
Is more than conqueror.

Stand then in his great might,
With all his strength endued;
But take, to arm you for the fight,
The panoply of God.

4 From strength to strength go on,
Wrestle, and fight, and pray:

320

Tread all the powers of darkness down,
And win the well-fought day.

That having all things done,

And all your conflicts pass'd,

Ye may o'ercome, through Christ alone,
And stand entire at last.

That ye may be able to withstand in the
evil day, and having done all to stand.-
Eph. vi. 13.

1 STAND up, stand up, for Jesus,
Ye soldiers of the cross;

Lift high his royal banner,
It must not suffer loss:
From victory unto victory
His army shall he lead;
Till every foe is vanquish'd,
And Christ is Lord indeed.

[7s. 6s.

2 Stand up, stand up, for Jesus;
The trumpet call obey;
Forth to the mighty conflict
In this his glorious day :
Ye that are men now serve him
Against unnumber'd foes;
Your courage rise with danger,
And strength to strength oppose.
3 Stand up, stand up, for Jesus;
Stand in his strength alone;
The arm of flesh will fail you,
Ye dare not trust your own :
Put on the gospel armour,

And watching unto prayer,
When duty calls, or danger,
Be never wanting there.
4 Stand up, stand up, for Jesus;
The strife will not be long;
This day the noise of battle,
The next the victor's song:

To him that overcometh

A crown of life shall be;
He with the King of Glory
Shall reign eternally."

321 Be ye sober, and watch unto prayer.-1 Pet. iv. 7. [7s. 3.

1 "CHRISTIAN, seek not yet repose,"

Hear thy guardian angel say;
Thou art in the midst of foes;

[ocr errors]

"Watch and pray."

2 Principalities and powers,
Mustering their unseen array,
Wait for thy unguarded hours:

"Watch and pray."

3 Gird thy heavenly armour on,
Wear it ever night and day;

Ambush'd lies the evil one:

"Watch and pray."

4 Hear the victors who o'ercame;
Still they mark each warrior's way;
All with one sweet voice exclaim,
"Watch and pray."

5 Hear, above all, hear thy Lord,
Him thou lovest to obey;
Hide within thy heart his word,
"Watch and pray."

6 Watch, as if on that alone,
Hung the issue of the day;

Pray, that help may be sent down;
Watch and pray."

322 Be strong and of good courage: for the Lord thy [11s. God, he it is that doth go with thee.-Deut.

xxxi. 6.

1 ONWARD, Christian soldiers, marching as to war,
Looking unto Jesus, who is gone before.
Christ, the Royal Master, leads against the foe,
Forward into battle, see, his banners go.
Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war,
Looking unto Jesus, who is gone before.

;

2 At the name of Jesus Satan's host doth flee
On, then, Christian soldiers, on to victory!
Hell's foundations quiver at the shout of praise:
Brothers, lift your voices; loud your anthems

raise.

Onward, Christian soldiers, &c.

3 Like a mighty army, moves the Church of God. Brothers, we are treading where the saints have trod.

We are not divided, all one body we-
One in hope and doctrine, one in charity.
Onward, Christian soldiers, &c.

4 Crowns and thrones may perish, kingdoms rise

and wane;

But the Church of Jesus constant will remain :
