3 We mourn not that prophetic skill
Is found on earth no more :
In Scripture's sacred lore.
Ill demons to control;
Shalt chase them from the soul.
No mystic dreams we share;
And bless thee in our prayer. 6 When tongues shall cease, and power decay,
And knowledge empty prove,
With faith, with hope, with love.
243 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven [C.M,
as of a rushing mighty wind.-Acts ii. 2. 1 WHEN God of old came down from heaven,
and wrath he came;
Half darkness and half flame : 2 But when he came the second time, He came in
and love; Softer than gale at morning prime
Hover'd his holy Dove.
In sudden torrents dread,
The voice exceeding loud,
Thrill'd from the deep dark cloud;
5 So, when the Spirit of our God
Came down his flock to find,
A rushing mighty wind.
The sinful world around;
No place for it is found.
244 It is expedient for you that I go away: for if [TEN 8s.
I go not away, the Comforter will not come
unto you.—John xyi. 7.
That I should gain by losing thee?
And thou art more than mother dear;
How shall I live without thee here?
2 Swiftly and straight each tongue of flame
Through cloud and breeze unwavering came,
Where'er the Lord is, there are they ;
In every heart that gives them room
Zeal to inflame and vice consume. 3 Soft as the plumes of Jesus' Dove
They nurse the soul to heavenly love;
Nay, blessed Spirit! but by thee
finds wings to soar,
Mount, but be sober on the wing;
Take it on trust a little while;
In the full sunshine of his smile.
245 As many as are led by the Spirit of God, they [L.M.
are the sons of God. Rom. viii. 14.
With light and comfort from above :
O’er every thought and step preside.
And make us know and love thy way;
3 Lead us to holiness, the road
Which we must take to dwell with God :
Nor let us from his pastures stray.
To be with him for ever bless'd:
The glory of the Lord filled the house of God.
2 Chron. v. 14.
1 SPIRIT Divine, attend our prayers,
And make this house thy home;
O come, Great Spirit, come.
Our emptiness and woe:
Where all the righteous go.
Like sacrificial flame;
To our Redeemer's name.
This consecrated hour;
Thy fertilizing power.
The wings of peaceful love ;
Bless'd as the church above.
Make a lost world thy home ;
O come, Great Spirit, come.
247 My soul cleaveth to the dust : quicken thou me.
Ps. cxix. 25.
1 COME, Holy Spirit, heavenly Dove,
With all thy quickening powers :
In these cold hearts of ours.
Fond of these earthly toys;
To reach eternal joys!
In vain we strive to rise;
And our devotion dies.
In this poor dying state;
And thine to us so great ?
With all thy quickening powers;
And that shall kindle ours.

The world's foundations first were laid,
And make thy temples worthy thee.
