most representative Church Hymn-books, carefully collated, most of the hymns appear.

The Musical Edition contains those venerable tunes of the English Church which have been so long and justly prized, and, through the kind courtesy of their authors and proprietors, a very large number of those modern or revived compositions which have made the last few years an era in Church music, and also several valuable original tunes now first offered for the service of the sanctuary.

May it only be vouchsafed those who have prepared, and those who shall use, this manual of praise to join hereafter the choir of those harpers harping with their harps, as they sing that new song before the Throne, which none can learn but those who are redeemed from the earth.

E. H. B. Easter, 1870.;

NOTE TO THE REVISED AND ENLARGED

EDITION. NEARLY seven years have elapsed, since the First Edition of this work was published. During these years most of the hymn-books in widest circulation have been reissued in a revised and enlarged form, or have been supplemented with an appendix; and many editors have gratefully acknowledged their obligations to the Hymnal Companion. But such fruitfulness in the hymnody of the Church has stamped with the seal of general approval a large number of hymns, which at that time were only just coming into use. This is especially noticeable in hymns for Church

ons, in metrical litanies, and in hymns for

use.

children. The Editor deeply feels the responsibility of recasting a manual of praise, which has been adopted by more than a thousand congregations; but he dared not refuse the arduous toil and anxiety it involved, when assured that a larger collection was demanded and might be compiled on the same principles as before.

Only thirteen hymns of the earlier Edition, which experience proved were very seldom sung, have been omitted; but a very few verbal alterations, often by keeping more closely to the original, have been admitted in some hymns, and a few verses added to others, which it is hoped will greatly increase their value for congregational

One group of hymns has been transferred from the Sundays after Trinity to the Sundays after Easter; and a few hymns have been assigned to other groups with which they more nearly corresponded. One hundred and sixty additional hymns are introduced ; they appear under almost every division of the Hymnal, and are the works of more than one hundred authors and translators : a fact which in itself will be a pledge that they in some measure represent

" the voice of Christian life in Song."

And now in commending to his brethren this, which will in all probability be his latest compilation, the Editor can only express his deep thankfulness to God for the blessing which has rested on the former effort, and his earnest prayer that this too may be accepted of Him who inhabits the praises of His people.

The following Tables may afford some assistance to the

Clergy in selecting suitable hymns for the Sundays and Holy Days throughout the year. Sacramental and other Special Hymns must, it is obvious, be appointed as required.
