FOREWORD

Supplement III to the 1953 edition of the Immigration and Nationality Laws covers all law enacted, Executive orders and Presidential proclamations issued, and treaties entered into or terminated affecting immigration and nationality from January 1, 1955, through December 31, 1959. There were six proclamations establishing immigration quotas and two proclamations admitting the States of Alaska and Hawaii into the Union. Treaties of friendship, commerce, and navigation were entered into with Iran, Korea, Netherlands, and Nicaragua, and a trade agreement with the Republic of the Philippines which renders Philippine nationals eligible for nonimmigrant classification as treaty traders or investors under the provisions of section 101 (a) (15) (E) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, see SIII-4. The treaty with El Salvador was terminated on February 8, 1958, see SIII-4.

As in the 1953 volume, the material is presented in three parts: Part I contains the law; Part II, the proclamations and Executive orders; and Part III, law of general application. Errata, containing material inadvertently omitted from the 1953 edition of the main volume and Supplement II, may be found beginning at page IX.

In Part I the acts, or parts thereof, appearing in the 1953 volume, Supplement I, or Supplement II that are amended, repealed, or superseded are set forth first, chronologically, showing the action taken with citations to the pages of the 1953 volume, Supplement I, or Supplement II where the law may be found. In the text of such law, changes in wording appear in italics, with the law as it was before modification shown in footnotes. Repeal in whole or in part of prior law is indicated. All legislation affecting immigration and nationality enacted during the period covered by this supplement follows in chronological order.

Footnotes for any material reprinted from the 1953 volume, Supplement I, or Supplement II are given the same numerical designation they carried there. Where additional footnotes are needed to show previous wording or new data, they are designated by "SIII" followed by a letter (SIIIa, SIIIb, SIIIc, etc.). References to pages of this supplement, except in the index, are preceded by SIII (SIII-13). References to pages in Supplement I or Supplement II are preceded by "SI" (SI-13) or "SII” (SII-13). All other references are to pages in the 1953 edition.
