* An idol of the Ammonites, unto whom they burned and sacrificed their children, 2 Kings, chap. xxiii. ver. 10. This seemed to be the chief and principal of all idols, and was allowed by the Jews to be of great stature, and hollow within, having seven places or chambers within him: one was to receive meal that was offered, another turtle-doves, the third a sheep, the fourth a ram, the fifth a calf, the sixth an ox, the seventh a child. This idol's face was like a calf, his hands were ever stretched out to receive gifts: his priests were called Chemarim, read 2 Kings, chap. xxiii. ver. 5. and Hosea, chap. x. ver. 5.

§ I will punish the land where such incestuous marriage and pollutions are suffered.

He compareth the wicked to evil humours and surfeiting, which corrupt the stomach and oppress nature, and therefore must be cast out by vomit.

Both for their wicked marriages, unnatural intercourse, idolatry, or spiritual whoredom with Molech, and such like abominations.

Either by the civil sword, or by some plague that God will send upon such.

** That is, void of all pollution, idolatry, and superstition both of soul and body.

This had a peculiar respect to the golden calf, but likewise comprehends all other idolatrous

images.

This is an introduction to the command in verse 7.

CHAP. XVIII. *

1 Unlawful marriages. 19 Unlawful lusts.

AND the LORD spake unto Moses,

saying,

2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, I am the LORD your God.

3 After the doings of the land of Egypt wherein ye dwelt shall ye not do and after the doings of the land of Canaan whether I bring you, shall ye not do: neither shall ye walk in their ordinances.

:

4 Ye shall do my judgments, and keep mine ordinances, to walk therein I am the LORD your God. 5 Ye shall therefore keep my statutes and my judgments: which if a man do, he shall live in them: I am the LORD.

6

None of you shall approach to any that is near of kin to him, to uncover their nakedness: I am the LORD.

[ocr errors][merged small][merged small]

7 The nakedness of thy father, § or the nakedness of thy mother, shalt thou not uncover: she is thy mother, thou shalt not uncover her nakedness.

8 The nakedness of thy father's wife shalt thou not uncover: it is thy father's nakedness.

9 The nakedness of thy sister, the daughter of thy father, or daughter of thy mother, whether she be born at home, or born abroad, even their nakedness thou shalt not uncover.

woman.

14 Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy father's brother, thou shalt not approach to his wife: she is thine aunt.

15 Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy daughter-in-law': she is thy son's wife, thou shalt not uncover her nakedness.

16 Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy brother's wife, it is thy brother's nakedness.

17 Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of a woman and her daughter, neither shalt thou take her son's daughter, or her daughter's daughter, to uncover her nakedness; for they are her near kinswomen, it is wickedness.

18 Neither shalt thou take a wife to her sister to vex her, to uncover her nakedness beside the other in her life time.

19 Also thou shalt not approach unto a woman to uncover her nakedness, as long as she is put apart for her uncleanness.

* This chapter is free from emendations; it contains the prohibition of the several incests, the particulars of which seem very puzzling, unless assisted by the explanation of Rabinical tradition. There seems to be a repetition of several similar cases, of which, by their rules of explaining the Bible, they find out a proper distinction; but, as they are of no use to Christians, who reject them, I shall not enter into that subject.

In the beginning of this verse, the nakedness of the father is forbidden, jointly with the mother's-Then Scripture repeats, "she is thy mother's nakedness," leaving out the father's; and as that seems to be addressed to a daughter, and none of these restrictions refer immediately to that sex, on account of its weakness, which renders it incapable of being chief agent of this crime, (though certainly included in it,) Scripture, to remove the idea of its being addressed to a daughter, explains the meaning of it in verse 8, that this expression means his father's wife.

is the thing which the LORD hath commanded, * saying,

3 What man soever there be of the house of Israel, that killeth an ox, § or lamb, or goat, in the camp, or that killeth it out of the camp. 4 And bringeth it not unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, to offer an offering unto the LORD before the tabernacle of the LORD; blood shall be imputed unto that man, he hath shed blood;. and that man shall be cut off from among his people:

5 To the end that the children of Israel may bring their sacrifices, which they offer in the open field, even that they may bring them unto the LORD, unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation unto the priest, and offer them for peace-offerings unto the LORD.

6 And the priest shall sprinkle the blood upon the altar of the LORD, at the door of the taber nacle of the congregation, and burn the fat for a sweet savour unto the Lord.

7 And they shall no more offer their sacrifices unto devils, T after whom they have gone a whoring: this shall be a statute for ever unto them throughout their gene

13 And whatsoever man there be of the children of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn among you, which hunteth and catcheth any beast or fowl that may be eaten; §§ he shall even pour out the blood thereof, and cover it with dust.

*

9 And bringeth it not unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, to offer it unto the LORD; even that man shall be cut off from among his people.

14 For it is the life of all flesh, the blood of it is for the life thereof: therefore I said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall eat the blood of no manner of flesh; for the life of all flesh is the blood thereof: whosoever eateth it, shall be cut off.

15 And every soul that eateth that which died of itself, or that which was torn with beasts (whether it be one of your own country, or a stranger) he shall both wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even: then shall he be clean.

16 But if he wash them not, nor bathe his flesh; then he shall bear his iniquity.

Lest they should practice that idolatry which they had learned among the Egyptians.
To make a sacrifice or offering thereof.

I do as much abhor it, as though he had killed a man. See Isaiah, lxvi. ver. 8.

Wheresoever they were moved with foolish devotion to offer it,

This is a permanent restriction..

** I conceive this was not to take place till they were settled in their land, and a place was pitched upon for the tabernacle to be settled there; for, till then, private high places and altars were permitted, for every man to offer his own burnt-offering on them; but, after that, they were forbidden to do it. Vide Deuteronomy, chap. xii. ver. 8, to verse 14,

§§ Which the law permitteth to be eaten, because it is clean.
