• This, and in verse 15, «neither shall he profane,” are both wrong; for, neither of them means a fresh order, but that, by doing the above-mentioned things, they would profane the sanctuary of his God, in verse 12, or his own seed, in verse 15.-Note, The blemishes of the priest, from verse 16 to the end, I cannot tell whether they are properly translated, or not, as the opinions are various concerning their meaning.

For by his anointing he was preferred to the other priests, and therefore could not lament the dead lest he should have polluted his holy anointing.

3 And for his sister, a virgin § that is nigh unto him, which hath had no husband; for her may he be defiled.

4 But he shall not defile himself, being a chief man among his people, to profane himself.

5 They shall not make baldness upon their head, neither shall they shave off the corner of their beard, nor make any cuttings in their flesh.

6 They shall be holy unto their God: and not profane the name of their God: for the offerings of the LORD made by fire, and the bread of their God they do offer: therefore they shall be holy.

7 They shall not take a wife that is a whore, or profane: neither shall they take a woman put away from her husband: for he is holy unto his God.

10

8 Thou shalt sanctify him therefore: for he offereth the bread of thy God he shall be holy unto thee: for I the LORD, which sanctify" you, am holy.

9 And the daughter of any priest, if she profane herself by playing the whore she profaneth her father: she shall be burnt with fire.

10 And he that is the high-priest among his brethren, upon whose head the anointing oil was poured,

* The Rabins explain this traditionally for his wife; therefore the addition of that is, made by the English translator, is unwarrantable, as it is a paraphrase of his own, and not the certain meaning of the text. I shall also observe, that the beginning of this chapter cannot be properly understood without having recourse to traditional explanation.

§ For being married, she seemed to be cut off from his family.

+ This cannot be the meaning, for Scripture speaks here of a common priest, but the word y means a husband; and this verse signifies that a priest, that marries one of the women forbidden to him, which makes him profane, may not defile himself for her when she dieth; accordingly this verse is thus paraphrased: "A husband that has made himself profane, and thereby becomes as one "of his people, being degraded from the priesthood, such a husband may not defile himself for his wife which made him profane,"

* For a man to be punished with death for this crime, the curse must be expressed with the name of the LORD, or of one of his holy attributes, and the person accused of the crime must be above twenty years old and so in ver. 11, 12, 13, 16, and 27.
