Chairman Rangel's Questions

Question 1:

What are the estimated quantities of heroin, cocaine, marijuana, hashish and methaqualone thought to have entered the United States from abroad for calendar years 1980 through 1982 and 1983 to date? We would like to know from what countries these drugs are being smuggled as far as it is known.

Answer:

Official estimates from the latest report of the National Narcotics Intelligence Consumers Committee (NNICC) are only available through 1981. These estimates are as follows:

For each year, it would be very helpful if you could detail for us the total number of Class I through IV violators arrested and convicted of drug offenses by DEA, and the number convicted by the DEA/State and Local Task Forces. We would like to be informed of the total quantities of heroin, cocaine, marijuana, hashish and methaqualone seized by DEA in the United States and the quantities confiscated by the DEA/State and Local Task Forces.

Answer:

Question 3:

The annual seizures of clandestine laboratories manufacturing PCP amphetamines, methamphetamines, LSD, and other psychotropic and narcotic drugs is an important consideration of this Committee, and we would like the DEA record in this area as well as that of the DEA/State and local Task Forces from 1980 through 1982 and for 1983 to date.

Answer:

Below are statistics regarding the seizure of clandestine laboratories from 1980 to May 15, 1983 for DEA and the DEA/State and local Task Forces:

Another indicator we would like you to list and discuss is the amount of monetary and real estate assets seized as well as the number of motor vehicles, aircraft and boats confiscated for the years 1980 through 1982 and 1983 to date. We would also like a separate breakdown of the seizures made by the DEA/State and Local Task Forces.

Answer:

Asset seizures prior to 1982 cannot be broken out by type of asset. DEA's system for reporting asset seizures does not allow for provision of data by calendar year. These data are provided for FY 82 and for FY 83 through May 19, 1983.

State and Local Task Force seizures cannot be broken out by type of asset. Total value of State and Local Task Force seizures are available only for FY 83 through May 19, 1983.
