SHORT ESSAYS: Original and Selected. WITH SPECIMENS OF LETTERS BY THE BEST INTRODUCTORY CHAPTERS ON ENGLISH A COPIOUS LIST OF SUBJECTS FOR EXERCISES, AND A COLLECTION OF FAULTY EXPRESSIONS TO BE 2s. 6d. London: MOFFATT AND PAIGE, 28, WARWICK LANE, PATERNOSTER ROW. 2709. f.19 PREFACE. THIS little work has been drawn up for the purpose of assisting young students in writing themes, as a preparation for the Oxford and Cambridge, Civil Service, Scholarship, Certificate, and other examinations. A few of the essays have been selected from the writings of good authors of various periods, and from newspapers, so as to afford specimens of various styles of composition. A list of subjects suitable for themes has been appended. Many others could be selected by the teacher in connection with the work of the pupils in Physical Geography, Literature, History, Biography, Political Economy, and other branches of study. Many of the subjects have been selected from Examination Papers. Most of the examples of errors in grammatical construction are selected from Addison and other good authors, who, though masters of style, are by no means free from defects in matters of detail. 3 |
