ye gave me no drink; I was a stranger, and ye took me not in; naked, and ye clothed me not; sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. Then shall they also answer Him, saying, Lord, when saw we Thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto Thee? Then shall He answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. And these shall go away into everlasting punishment; but the righteous into life eternal."

Every word came to pass that our Lord and Saviour foretold about Jerusalem; and so will all the awful things that He here says about the day of judgment. Let us pray that we may be placed among the sheep, on His right hand, in that fearful day.

38. THE LAST SUPPER.

THE Lord Jesus Christ knew that the time had now come when He was to be put to death. One of His disciplesthe wicked, covetous Judas-had agreed to betray Jesus to the chief priests, if they would give him thirty pieces of silver. This wicked man did all secretly; but the Lord Jesus knew what he had done. The feast of the Passover was now come; and Jesus sent two of His disciples into the village to prepare it, saying, "Behold, when ye are entered into the city, there shall a man meet you, bearing a pitcher of water: follow him into the house where he entereth in. And ye shall say unto the goodman of the house, The Master saith unto thee, Where is the guest-chamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples? And he shall shew you a

large upper room furnished: there make ready." The two disciples went to the town, and found all things just as the Lord told them. When every thing was ready, the Lord Jesus sat down to supper with His twelve apostles. His tender heart was sad; and He said to the disciples, “Verily I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.'

After supper, our Lord Jesus Christ rose up from the table. He then took a towel, and bound it round Him; and pouring some water into a basin, He began to wash His disciples' feet.

He did this to teach us to be humble and kind, as He was.

St. Peter loved his Lord and Master, and he could not bear to see Him washing his feet; and he said, "Thou shalt never wash my feet." The Lord Jesus

said to him, "If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me." When Peter saw that he could not be saved if the Lord Jesus did not wash him, he was willing that the Lord should wash him from head to feet.

After the Lord Jesus had washed the disciples' feet, He sat down at the table, and said, "Ye call me Master and Lord; and ye say well; for so I am. If I, then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet, ye also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them."

Our Lord now became very sorrowful; and He said, "Verily, verily I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me." Then the disciples looked one on another,

doubting of whom He spake. Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved. Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, that he should ask who it should be of whom He spake. He then, lying on Jesus' breast, saith unto Him, "Lord, who is it?" Jesus answered, "He it is to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it." And when He had dipped the sop, He gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, "That thou doest, do quickly." Now no man at the table knew for what intent He spake this unto him. For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor. He then, having received the sop, went immediately out: and it was night.
