13 but they that are sick. But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call

slidings, I will love them freely; for mine anger is turned away from him. Ho. xiv. 4. They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. Mar. ii. 17. Jesus answering, said unto them (the Scribes and Pharisees), They that are whole need not a physician, but they that are sick. Lu. v. 31. A woman having an issue of blood twelve years, which had spent all her living upon physicians, neither could be healed of any, came behind him (Jesus), and touched the border of his garment and immediately her issue of blood staunched. Lu. viii. 43, 44. The people when they knew it (that Jesus went aside privately into a desert place, &c.) followed him. And he received them, and spake unto them of the kingdom of God, and healed them that had need of healing. Lu. ix. 11. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican; I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven; but smote upon his breast, Saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. Lu. xviii. 11, 12, 13. I was alive without the law once, but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died. And the commandment which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death, for sin taking occasion by the commandment deceived me, and by it slew me. Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy and just and good. Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid! but sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good, that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful. For we know that the law is spiritual; but I am carnal, sold under sin. For that which I do, I allow not: for what I would, that do I not, but what I hate, that I do. If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good. Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) dwelleth no good thing, for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not, for the good that I would, I do not; but the evil which I would not, that I do. Now, if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me: for I delight in the law, after the inward man. But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin

which is in my members. O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? Ro. vii. 9-24. Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing, and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked; I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eye-salve that thou mayest see. Re. iii. 17, 18. See chap. xviii. 11.

13 Go ye and learn.] He (Jesus) said unto them (the Pharisees), Have ye not read what David did when he was an hungered, and they that were with him? Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the Sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath, and are blameless? But if ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless. Mat. xii. 3. 5. 7. Have ye not read, that he which made them (the man and his wife) at the beginning, made them male and female. Mat. xix. 4 Did you never read in the Scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner; this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes. Mat. xxi. 42. As touching the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read that which was spoken unto you by God, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living. Mat. xxii. 31, 32. As touching the dead, that they rise; have ye not read in the book of Moses, how in the bush God spake unto him, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? Mar, xii. 26. What is written in the law (said Jesus to the lawyer who tempted him, saying, What shall I do to inherit eternal life)? how readest thou? Lu. x. 26. Is it not written in your law (said Jesus to the Jews, who declared they stoned him for making himself God), I said ye are gods? John x. 34.

I will have mercy.] To do justice and judgment is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice. Pr. xxi. 3. I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings. Ho. vi. 6. Wherewith shall I come before the Lord, and dow myself before the high God? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves of a year old? Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousand rivers of oil? Shall I give my first-born for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? He hath shewed thee, O man,

the righteous, but sinners to repentance. Then came to him the 14

what is good, and what doth the Lord God require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God? Mi. vi. 6, 7, 8.

To call the righteous.] The Son of man is come to save that which was lost: how think ye? If a man have an hundred sheep, and one of them be gone astray, doth he not leave the ninety and nine, and goeth into the mountains, and seeketh that which is gone astray? And if so be that he find it, verily I say unto you, he rejoiceth more of that sheep, than of the ninety and nine which went not astray. Mat. xviii. 11, 12, 13. They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick; I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. Mar. ii. 17, and Lu. v. 32. And he (Jesus) spake this parable unto them, saying, What man of you having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost until he find it? And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders rejoicing, and when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and neighbours, saying, Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost. I say unto you, That likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons which need no repentance. Lu. xv. 3-7. Either what woman having ten pieces of silver, if she lose one piece, doth not light a candle, and sweep the house, and seek diligently till she find it? And when she hath found it she calleth her friends and her neighbours together, saying, Rejoice with me, for I have found the piece which I had lost. Likewise I say unto you, There is a joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth. Lu. xv. 8, 9, 10. The Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost. Lu. xix. 10. As it is written, There is none righteous, no not one; there is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God; they are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable: there is none that doeth good, no not one. Their throat is an open sepulchre, with their tongues they have used deceit, the poison of asps is under their lips, whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness. Their feet are swift to shed blood; destruction and misery are in their ways, and the way of peace have they not known: there is no fear of God before their eyes. Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight; for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

But now the righteousness of God, without the law, is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets. Even the righteousness of God, which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all, and upon all them that believe, for there is no difference; for all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God. Ro. iii. 10-24. Know ye not, that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived, neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, nor thieves, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God, and such were some of you; but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God. 1 Co. vi. 9, 10, 11. I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry, who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious; but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love, which is in Christ Jesus. This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, That Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief. Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all long-suffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting. 1 Ti. i. 12-16.

But sinners to repentance.] See chap. iii. 2. 8; iv. 17. and com. Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. Mat. xi. 20, 21. Seek ye the Lord while he may be found: call ye upon him while he is near. Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. Is. Iv. 6, 7. I say unto you, That likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance. Lu. xv. 7. Thus it is written, And thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day; and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. Lu. xxiv. 46, 47. Repent and be baptized, every one of you (said Peter to the men of Judea, &c. on the day of Pentecost), in the name of Jesus Christ, for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Ac. ii. 38. Repent ye therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord. Ac. iii.

disciples of John, saying, Why do we and the Pharisees fast oft,

19. Him (Jesus) hath God exalted with his
right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for
to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness
of sins. Ac. v. 31. Then hath God also to
the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.
Ac. xi. 18. The times of this ignorance (in
worshipping idols) God winked at; but now
commandeth all men every where to repent.
Because he hath appointed a day, in the which
he will judge the world in righteousness by that
man whom he hath ordained, whereof he hath
given assurance unto all men, in that he
hath raised him from the dead. Ac. xvii.
30, 31. I kept back nothing that was profit-
able unto you, but have shewed you, and have
taught you publicly (said Paul), and from
house to house: testifying both to the Jews
and also to the Greeks, repentance toward
God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.
Ac. xx. 20, 21. I have appeared unto thee
for this purpose (said Jesus to Paul), to make
thee a minister and a witness, both of these
things which thou hast seen, and of those
things in the which I will appear unto thee,
delivering thee from the people, and from the
Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee, to
open their eyes, and to turn them from dark-
ness to light, and from the power of Satan,
unto God; that they may receive forgiveness
of sins, and inheritance among them which
are sanctified by faith that is in me. Ac. xxvi.
16, 17, 18. Whereupon, O king Agrippa,
I was
not disobedient unto the heavenly
vision, but shewed first unto them of Damas-
cus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the
coasts of Judea, and then to the Gentiles,
that they should repent and turn to God, and
do works meet for repentance. Ac. xxvi. 19,
20.
This is a faithful saying, and worthy of
all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into
the world to save sinners. 1 Ti. i. 15. Be
gentle unto all men, in meekness instructing
those that oppose themselves; if God per-
adventure will give them repentance to the
acknowledging of the truth, and that they
may recover themselves out of the snare of
the Devil, who are taken captive by him at
his will. 2 Ti. ii. 25, 26. The Lord is not
slack concerning his promise as some men
count slackness; but is long-suffering to us-
ward, not willing that any should perish, but
that all should come to repentance. 2 Pe.
iii. 9.

14. The disciples of John.] Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples (to Jesus). Mat. xi. 2. There arose a question between some of John's disciples, and the Jews, about purifying. John iii. 25. When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John (though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples), he left Judea, and departed

again into Galilee. John iv. 1, 2, 3. See chap. xi. 2.

Why do we and the Pharisees fast.] See chap. vi. 16. and com. John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil. The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous and a wine-bibber; a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children. Mat. xi. 18, 19. Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find? Pr. xx. 6. The disciples of John, and of the Pharisees, used to fast; and they come and say unto him (Jesus), Why do the disciples of John, and of the Pharisees fast, but thy disciples fast not? Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bride-chamber fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast; but the days will come when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days. No man seweth a piece of new cloth on an old garment, else the new piece that filleth it up taketh away from the old, and the rent is made worse. And no man putteth new wine into old bottles, else the new wine doth burst the bottles, and the wine is spilled, and the bottles will be marred; but new wine must be put into new bottles. Mar. ii. 18-22. Why do the disciples of John fast often, and make prayers, and likewise the disciples of the Pharisees, but thine eat and drink? And he said unto them, Can ye make the children of the bride-chamber fast while the bridegroom is with them? but the days will come when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days. And he spake also a parable unto them, No man putteth a piece of new garment upon an old; if otherwise, then both the new maketh a rent and the piece, that was takes out of the new agreeth not with the old. And no man putteth new wine into old bottles, else the new wine will burst the bottles, and be spilled, and the bottles shall perish. new wine must be put into new bottles, and both are preserved. No man, also, having drunk old wine, straightway desireth new : for he saith, The old is better. Lu. v. 33-39. And he (Jesus) spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others. Two men went up into the temple to pray, the one a Pharisee and the other a Publican; the Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this Publican: I fast twice in the week, 1 give tithes of all that I possess. Lu. xviii. 9-12.

But

but thy disciples fast not? And Jesus said unto them, Can the 15 children of the bride-chamber mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? but the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then shall they fast. No man putteth a 16

15 Can the children of the bride-chamber mourn.] Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. And five of them were wise and five were foolish. They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them; but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. While the bridegroom tarried they all slumbered and slept. And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him. Then all those virgins arose and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil, for our lamps are gone out. But the wise answered, saying, Not so, lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves. And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came, and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage; and the door was shut. Mat. xxv. 1-10. And it came to pass, when they saw him (Samson, who came to make a feast before his marriage,) that they brought thirty companions to be with him. And Samson said unto them, I will now put forth a riddle unto you. Out of the eater came forth meat, and out of the strong came forth sweetness, &c. Ju. xiv. 11, 12. "She" ("the king's daughter") shall be brought unto the king in raiment of needlework; the virgins her companions that followed her shall be brought unto thee; with gladness and rejoicing shall they be brought. They shall enter into the king's palace. Ps. xlv. 14, 15. He that hath the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom's voice. This my joy therefore is fulfilled. John iii. 29. Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage-supper of the Lamb. Re. xix. 9. And I, John, saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. Re. xxi. 2.

When the bridegroom shall be taken from them.] And, behold, two of "them" ("his disciples") went that same day (the first day of the week) to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs, and they talked together of all these things which had happened. And it came to pass, that while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near and went with them; but their eyes were holden that they should not know him. And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad? And the one of them,

whose name was Cleopas, answering, said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days? And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people; and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him. But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel; and beside all this, to-day is the third day since these things were done. Lu. xxiv. 13-21. Because I have said these things unto you (that I go my way to him that sent me, said Jesus,) sorrow hath filled your heart. Verily, verily, I say unto you, that ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice; and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy. Ye now, therefore, have sorrow, but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you. John xvi. 6. 20. 22. And when "he" ("Jesus") had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up, and a cloud received him out of their sight, and while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel. Ac. i. 9, 10.

And then shall they fast.] In that day (of the invasion of Jewry by the Persians) did the Lord God of hosts call to weeping, and to mourning, and to baldness, and to girding with sackcloth. Is. xxii. 12. Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers; as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen which had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away. Ac. xiii. 1-3. When

they" ("Paul and Barnabas”) had ordained them elders in every church, and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, on whom they believed. Ac. xiv. 23. Defraud ye not one the other, except it be with consent for a time, that ye may give yourselves to fasting and prayer. 1 Co. vii. 5. Of the Jews (said Paul) five times received I forty stripes save one. Thrice was I beaten with rods, &c. &c. In weariness and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold, and nakedness. 2 Co. xi. 27.

piece of new cloth unto an old garment, for that which is put in to fill it up taketh from the garment, and the rent is made worse. 17 Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but they 18 put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved. While

he spake these things unto them, behold, there came a certain ruler, and worshipped him, saying, My daughter is even now dead:

16 For that which is put in.] Let my lord, I pray thee, pass over before his servant (said Jacob to Esau), and I will lead on softly, according as the cattle that goeth before me and the children be able to endure, until I come unto my lord unto Seir. Ge. xxxiii. 14. The rod of the wicked shall not rest upon the lot of the righteous, lest the righteous put forth their hands unto iniquity. Ps. cxxv. 3. He shall feed his flock like a shepherd; he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young. Is. xl. 11. I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. John xvi. 12. I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. I have fed you with milk, and not with meat; for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able. 1 Co. iii. 1, 2. And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three, but the greatest of these is charity. 1 Co. xiii. 13.

17 Old bottles.] "They" ("the inhabitants of Gibeon") did work wilily (with Joshua and with Israel), and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine-bottles, old, and rent, and bound up. Jos. ix. 4. Behold, my belly is as wine which hath no vent; it is ready to burst like new bottles. Job xxxii. 19. I am become like a bottle in the smoke, yet do I not forget thy statutes. Ps. cxix. 83.

18 Behold, there came, &c.] Behold, there cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name; and when he saw him, he fell at his feet, and besought him greatly, saying, My little daughter lieth at the point of death, I pray thee come and lay thy hands on her that she may be healed: and she shall live. Mar. v. 22, 23. Behold, there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue; and he fell down at Jesus' feet, and besought him that he would come into his house; for he had one only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she lay a dying. Lu. viii. 41, 42.

Ruler.] While he (Jesus) yet spake, there cometh one from the ruler of the synagogue's house, saying to him, Thy daughter is dead; trouble not the Master. Lu. viii. 49. And the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because that Jesus had healed (the woman who had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years) on the sabbath day, and said

unto the people, There are six days in which men ought to work; in them therefore come and be healed, and not on the sabbath-day. Lu. xiii. 14. A certain ruler asked him, saying, Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? Lu. xviii. 18. After the reading of the law and the prophets, the rulers of the synagogue sent unto them, saying, Ye men and brethren, if ye have any word of exhortation for the people say on. Ac. xiii. 15.

Worshipped him.] See chap. ii. 2. 11. iv. 9. and viii. 2. When "they" ("the disciples") were come to the multitude, there came to him a certain man, kneeling down to him. Mat. xvii. 14. Then came to "him" ("Jesus") the mother of Zebedee's children with her sons, worshipping him, and desiring a certain thing of him. Mat. xx. 20. And when they (the eleven disciples) saw him (Jesus) they worshipped him, but some doubted. Mat. xxviii. 17. Behold, there cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name, and when he saw him he fell at his feet. Mar. v. 22. One of them (the ten lepers) when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God; and fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks; and he was a Samaritan. Lu. xvii. 15, 16. As Peter was coming in (to Cornelius' house), Cornelius met him, and fell down at his feet and worshipped him. But Peter took him up, saying, Stand up, I myself also am a man. Ac. x. 25, 26.

My daughter is even now dead.] See verse 24. My little daughter (said Jairus the ruler) lieth at the point of death; I pray thee come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be healed; and she shall live. Mar. v. 23. A certain centurion's servant, who was dear unto him, was sick and ready to die. And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders of the Jews, beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant. And when they came to Jesus, they besought him instantly, saying, That he was worthy for whom he should do this; for he loveth our nation, and he hath built us a synagogue. Then Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble not thyself, for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof; wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee. But say in a word, and my servant shall be healed. For I also am a man
