66 "Let us draw near with a true | 6 0 thou, by whom we come to God,

heart." Heb. 10: 22.

1 PRAYER is the soul's sincere desire,
Uttered or unexpressed;
The motion of a hidden fire
That trembles in the breast.

2 Prayer is the burden of a sigh,
The falling of a tear,
The upward glancing of an eye,
When none but God is near.

8 Prayer is the simplest form of speech
That infant lips can try;
Prayer the sublimest strains that

reach

The Majesty on high.

4 Prayer is the contrite sinner's voice,
Returning from his ways;
While angels in their songs rejoice,
And cry, "Behold, he prays!"

5 Prayer is the Christian's vital breath, The Christian's native air,

His watchword at the gates of death:
He enters heaven with prayer.

The Life, the Truth, the Way! The path of prayer thyself hast trod; Lord! teach us how to pray. 67

"When thou hast shut thy door,

pray to thy Father which is in secret." Matt. 6: 6.

1 DEAR Father, to thy mercy-seat My soul for shelter flies:

'Tis here I find a safe retreat When storms and tempests rise. My cheerful hope can never die, If thou, my God, art near; Thy grace can raise my comforts high,

And banish every fear.

My great Protector and my Lord! Thy constant aid impart;

Oh! let thy kind, thy gracious word
Sustain my trembling heart.

Oh! never let my soul remove
From this divine retreat;

Still let me trust thy power and lowe,
And dwell beneath thy feet.

68 "0 God, hear the prayer of thy
servant." Dan. 9: 17.

APPROACH, my soul, the mercy-seat,
Where Jesus answers prayer;
There humbly fall before his feet,
For none can perish there.

2 Thy promise is my only plea,
With this I venture nigh;
Thou callest burdened souls to thee,
And such, O Lord, am I.

3 Bowed down beneath a load of sin,
By Satan sorely pressed,
By war without, and fear within,
I come to thee for rest.

4 Be thou my shield and hiding-place; That, sheltered near thy side,

I may my fierce accuser face,
And tell him, "Thou hast died."

5 Oh, wondrous love, to bleed and die,

To bear the cross and shame, That guilty sinners, such as I, Might plead thy gracious Name.
