BULLETINS

Bulletins contain significant data and interpretations that are of lasting scientific interest but are generally more limited in scope or geographic coverage than professional papers. They include the results of resource studies and of geologic and topographic investigations; as well as collections of short papers related to a specific topic.

В 1787-AA. COLORADO. Facies analysis, genetic sequences, and paleogeography of the lower part of the Minturn Formation

(Middle Pennsylvanian), southeastern Eagle Basin, Colorado, by J. A. Karachewski, Amoco Production Co. 1992. p. AA1AA30. (Evolution of sedimentary basins; Uinta and Piceance basins.) $4.50.

This report presents detailed sedimentologic information on the Minturn Formation of north-central Colorado. The Minturn was deposited along the eastern margin of the Eagle Basin and consists of siliciclastic and carbonate rocks deposited in alluvial-fan, braidplain, Gilbert-delta, shoreline, paralic, and offshore marine environments. Twelve genetic sequences, defined as paired transgressive-regressive units, were recognized. Facies and sequence geometry and distribution indicate significant tectonic controls on deposition.

B 1866-G. Complete Bouguer and isostatic residual gravity maps of the Anadarko Basin, Wichita Mountains, and surrounding areas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, and Colorado, by S. L. Robbins, U.S. Geological Survey; and G. R. Keller, Jr., University of Texas at El Paso. 1992. p. G1-G11. 2 plates in pocket. (Evolution of sedimentary basins; Anadarko Basin.) $1.25.

Two gravity maps (one in color) are presented at a scale of 1:1,000,000. The text is a tectonic overview of the more prominent features on these maps, including the Amarillo-Wichita and

Arbuckle uplifts, the Anadarko Basin, the Ardmore Basin, the Quachita Mountains thrust belt, the Arkoma Basin, and the possible southern extension of the Midcontinent gravity high.

B 1917-G. WYOMING. Petrology and reservoir paragenesis in the Sussex "B" sandstone of the Upper Cretaceous Cody Shale, House Creek and Porcupine fields, Powder River basin, Wyoming, by D. K. Higley. 1992. p. G1-G16. (Evolution of sedimentary basins; Powder River basin.) $1.75.

This evaluation of reservoir paragenesis includes detailed descriptions of the petrology of depositional facies of the Sussex "B" sandstone of the Sussex Sandstone Member of the Upper Cretaceous Cody Shale in the House Creek and Porcupine fields, Powder River basin, Wyoming.

B 1917-J. WYOMING, MONTANA. Depositional history of Jurassic rocks in the area of the Powder River basin, northeastern Wyoming and southeastern Montana, by E. A. Johnson. 1992. p. J1-J38. (Evolution of sedimentary basins; Powder River basin.) $2.50.

This report summarizes the history of clastic sedimentation in the eastern part of the middle Western Interior during the Middle and Late Jurassic. Fourteen lithostratigraphic units are discussed in relation to five separate marine inundations and six intervening erosional events.

B 1974. NEVADA. Stratigraphy, regional distribution, and reconnaissance geochemistry of Oligocene and Miocene volcanic rocks in the Paradise Range and northern Pactolus Hills, Nye County, Nevada, by D. A. John. 1992. 67 р. $4.

Stratigraphy, geochronology, and geochemistry of about 40 units of Oligocene and Miocene silicic ash-flow tuff, intermediate to silicic lava, and minor sedimentary rock exposed in three stratigraphic sections have been described. The distribution and sources of five regionally widespread ash-flow tuff units were delineated. The late Cenozoic volcanic and tectonic history of the Paradise Range and northern Pactolus Hills was compared to other areas in the Great Basin.

B 2001. WYOMING, NEVADA. Gold and other minor elements associated with the hot springs and geysers of Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, supplemented with data from Steamboat Springs, Nevada, by D. E. White, Chris Heropoulos and R. O. Fournier. 1992. 19 p. $1.75.

A reconnaissance search for gold in hydrothermal deposits of Yellowstone National Park revealed a few sinters with Au contents above the detection limit by the short-wavelength-radiation emission-spectrographic method (0.1 ppm). Au contents are generally higher at Steamboat Springs. The common trace elements Ag, As, Sb, Hg, and Tl also are generally enriched, providing useful geochemical tracers for disseminated gold.

CIRCULARS

Circulars present technical or nontechnical information of wide popular interest in a format designed for distribution at no cost to the public. They are published to disseminate administrative information or important scientific information of an ephemeral nature.

C 0930-K. International Strategic Minerals Inventory summary report; vanadium, by I. Goldberg, Minerals Bureau of South Africa; E. C. I. Hammerbeck, L. S. Labuschagne, and C. Rossouw, Geological Survey of South Africa. Prepared as a cooperative

effort among earth-science and mineral-resource agencies of Australia, Canada, the Federal Republic of Germany, the Republic of South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America. 1992. 45 р.

The world's major deposits and districts of vanadium are the subject of this eleventh report resulting from a cooperative datagathering effort with participation from earth-science and mineral resource agencies of six nations. In a format designed to be useful for both policymakers and geologists, the report presents an overview of vanadium resources and lists important geologic information and data conceming resources and production. Earlier reports in the series cover manganese, chromium, phosphate, nickel, platinum-group metals, cobalt, titanium, natural graphite, lithium, and tin.

C 1076. ALASKA. The Alaska Mineral Resource Assessment Program; background information to accompany geologic and mineral-resource maps of the Cordova and Middleton Island quadrangles, southern Alaska, by G. R. Winkler, George Plafker, R. J. Goldfarb and J. E. Case. 1992. 20 р.

This report summarizes recent results of integrated geological, geochemical, and geophysical field and laboratory studies conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey in two 1:250,000-scale quadrangles in coastal southern Alaska. The report contains an extensive reference list of pertinent sources of background information on the area and reviews the results of a current evaluation of the known and potential mineral and energy resources that was conducted as part of the Alaska Mineral Resource Assessment Program (AMRAP).

GEOGRAPHIC NAMES INFORMATION SYSTEM (GNIS)

GNIS, developed by the Geographic Names Information Section, Branch of Geographic and Cartographic Research, National Mapping Division, is the basis for Professional Paper 1200-The National Gazetteer of the United States, which is being published as a series of individual state gazetteer volumes. Prior to publication of any volume, the interim materials described may meet the needs of potential users. The information contained in GNIS is interactively available at the U.S. Geological Survey's information offices. Special searches of the system may be requested for a modest cost with the results available in bound listings and on magnetic tape.

Volumes of the National Gazetteer

This product is available only in book form and only for State files that have undergone the second phase of data compilation. The second phase of data compilation entails the inclusion of names found in Federal, State and other sources as well as historical material. In addition to official names, known variant names of features are listed cross-referenced to the appropriate official name. A variant name is any other known name or spelling applied to a feature.

Official State Gazetteers must be ordered from: USGS Book and Open-File Report Sales, Box 25425, Denver, CO 80225.
