DESTRUCTION OF JERUSALEM.

с

"not ye that speak, but the Holy Ghost: for I will give you a mouth
"and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay nor
"resist. Now the brother shall betray the brother to death, and the
"father the son; and children shall rise up against their parents, and shall
cause them to be put to death.2" And ye shall be betrayed both by
"parents, and brethren, and kinsfolks, and friends; and some of you shall
they cause to be put to death. And ye shall be hated of all men for
my
name's sake. And then shall many be offended. And many false
prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. And because iniquity shall
"abound, the love of many shall wax cold. But there shall not3 ad hair
"of your head perish. In your patience possess ye your souls,3 and 5 he
"that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. And this
"gospel of the kingdom shall 1 first be preached in all the world for a
"witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.1

"But when ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies,3 and 5 "the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, "standing 2* in the holy place where it ought not," (let him that readeth understand,)" then2 know that the desolation thereof is nigh. "and" the stars of heaven shall fall 2 from heaven.' And there shall be3 upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the "waves roaring; men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after "those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of the "heavens shall be shaken: and then shall appear the sign of the Son of "man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and "they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. "Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which "took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom, and five of "them were wise, and five were foolish. They that were foolish took "their lamps, and took no oil with them: but the wise took oil in "their vessels with their lamps. While the bridegroom tarried, they all "slumbered and slept. And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, "the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.' Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out.' But the wise "answered, saying, 'Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: "but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.' And while "they went to buy, the bridegroom came: and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut. Afterward "came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us.' But he answered and said, ' Verily I say unto you, I know you not.' Watch "therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of 66 man cometh.

CHAPTER L.

at Bethany.

Conspiracy of the Rulers against Jesus.-Judas Iscariot.-The Supper

3 after two days was 2" the feast of ' unleavened bread,3 which is called the passover.3

And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said unto his disciples,

"Ye know that after two days is the feast of the passover, and the Son "of man is betrayed to be crucified."

Then assembled together the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, unto the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, and consulted that they might take Jesus by subtilty and kill him. But they said,

1

"Not on the feast day, lest there be an uproar among the people." 1 For they feared the people.3

Now when Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper,' they made him a supper; and Martha served: but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him. Then there came unto him1 Mary11 having an alabaster box of very precious" ointment' of spikenard,2 of 5 a pound weight, and she brake the box,2 poured it on his head,2 and anointed his feet,4° as he sat at meat,' and wiped his feet with her hair.* And the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.4 But when his disciples saw it, there were some that had indignation within themselves.2

Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, which should betray him,

Why was this waste of the ointment made? To what purpose is this "waste? for this ointment might have been sold for1 more" than three "hundred pence, and have been given to the poor." 2

This he said not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein.*

And they murmured against her.2

When Jesus understood it," he said unto them,1

"Let her alone, why trouble ye2 the woman ?" for she hath wrought a "good work upon me. For ye have the poor always with you, and "whensoever ye will ye may do them good; but me ye have not always. "For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body, she did it for my "burial. She hath done what she could: she is come aforehand to anoint "my body to the burying,2 and 5 against the day of my burying hath she1
