The Prayer of Christ.

have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me. I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine. And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them. And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are. While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled. And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves. I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that

they also might be sanctified through the truth. Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; that they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one: I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me. Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world. righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me. And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them3.

Christ predicts the scattering of his Disciples.

WHEN Jesus had spoken these words, and they had sung an hymn, he went forth over the brook Cedron, to the mount of Olives,

where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples also followed him. Then saith Jesus unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad. But after I am risen again, I will go before you into Galilee. But Peter answered and said unto him, Though all men shall be offended because of thee, yet will I never be offended. Jesus saith unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this day, even in this night, before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice. But he spake the more vehemently, If I should die with thee, I will not deny thee in any wise. Likewise also said all the disciples 1.

THEN Cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane. And when he was at the place, he said unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder. And he took with him Peter and James and John, the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful, sore amazed, and very heavy. Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye

here, and watch with me. And he went a little farther, and was withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down, and fell on his face on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. And he said, Abba, Father, if it be possible, and all things are possible unto thee, take away this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done. And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, Simon, sleepest thou? What, could ye not watch with me one hour? Watch ye, rise and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done. And when he returned, he found them asleep again, (for their eyes were heavy,) neither wist they what to answer him. And he left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words. And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him. And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground. And when he rose up from prayer, and was come the third time to his disciples, he found them

sleeping for sorrow, and said unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest it is enough, the hour is come; behold the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise up, let us go; lo, he that betrayeth me is at hand 5.

AND Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples.

And immediately while he yet spake, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, the scribes and the elders of the people, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, with lanterns and torches and weapons. Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye? They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them. As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground. Then asked he them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus answered, I have told you that I am
