4 And his fons went and feafted in their houfes, every one his day and fent and called for their three fifters, to eat and to drink with them.

5 And it was fo, when the days of their feafting were gone about, that Job fent and fanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burntofferings according to the number of them all: for Job faid, It may be that my fons have finned, and curfed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.

6¶ Now there was a day when the fons of God came to prefent themselves before the Lord, and Satan came alfo among them. 7 And the Lord faid unto Satan, Whence comeft thou? Then Satan answered the Lord, and faid, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down

in it.

8 And the Lord faid unto Satan, Haft thou confidered my fervant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright

and efcheweth evil?

9 Then Satan answered the Lord, and faid, Doth Job fear God for nought?

10 Haft not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every fide? thou haft bleffed the work of his hands, and his fubftance is increased in the land.

II But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curfe thee to thy face.

12 And the Lord faid unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power: only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the Lord.

13 And there was a day when his fons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house:

14 And there came a mesfenger unto Job, and faid, The oxen were plowing, and the affes feeding befide them:

15 And the Sabeans fell upon them, and took them away; yea, they have flain the fervants with the edge of the fword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

16 While he was yet speaking, there came alfo another, R

and faid, The fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the fheep, and the fervants, and confumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

22 In all this Job finned not, nor charged God foolishly.

CHAP. II.

GAIN there was a day when the fons of

20 Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and fhaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped,

2 And the Lord faid unto Satan, From whence comeft thou? and Satan answered the Lord, and faid, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.

3 And the Lord faid unto Satan, Haft thou confidered my fervant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and efcheweth evil? and ftill he holdeth faft his integrity, although thou movedit me against him, to destroy him without cause.

4 And Satan answered the Lord, and faid, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life.

5 But put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curfe thee

21 And faid, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked fhall I return thi-to thy face. ther. The Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; bleffed be the name of the Lord.

6 And the Lord faid unto Satan, Behold, he is in thine hand; but fave his life.

7 So went Satan forth from the presence of the Lord, and fmote Job with fore boils from the fole of his foot unto his crown.

8 And he took him a potsherd to fcrape himself

him upon the ground seven days and feven nights, and none spake a word unto him: for they faw that his grief was very great.

CHAP. III.

II Now when Job's three friends heard of all this evil that was come upon him, they came every one from his own place; Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite; for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him, and to comfort him.

5 Let darkness and the fhadow of death stain it; let a cloud dwell upon it, let the blackness of the day terrify it. 6 As for that night, let darkness seize upon it; let it not be joined unto the days of the year, let it not come into the number of the months.

7 Lo, let that night be folitary, let no joyful voice come therein.

8 Let them curfe it that curfe the day, who are ready to raise up their mourn

12 And when they lifted up their eyes afar off, and knew him not, they lifted up their voice, and wept; and they rent every one his man-ing. tle, and fprinkled duft upon their heads toward heaven.

9 'Let the ftars of the twilight thereof be dark; let it look, for light, but have R 2

10 Because it fhut not up the doors of my mother's womb, nor hid forrow from mine eyes.

11 Why died I not from the womb? why did I not give up the ghost when I came out of the belly?

12 Why did the knees prevent me? or why the breafts that I should fuck.

13 For now fhould I have lain ftill, and been quiet, I should have flept; then had I been at reft;

21 Which long for death, but it cometh not; and dig for it more than for hid treafures;

22 Which rejoice exceedingly, and are glad, when they can find the grave?

23 Why is light given to a man whose way is hid, and whom God hath hedged in?

24 For my fighing cometh before I eat, and my roarings are poured out like the waters.

20 Wherefore is light given to him that is in mifery; and life unto the bitter

6 Is not this thy fear, thy confidence, thy hope, and the uprightness of thy ways? 7 ¶ Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished being innocent? or where were the righteous cut off?

17 Shall mortal man be more just than God? fhall a man be more pure than his Maker?

18 Behold, he put no truft in his fervants; and his

8 Even as I have seen, they that plow iniquity, and angels he charged with fow wickednefs, reap the folly: fame.

9 By the blaft of God they perish, and by the breath of his noftrils are they confumed.

10 The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, and the teeth of the young lions are broken.

II The old lion perifheth for lack of prey, and the ftout lion's whelps are scattered abroad.

12 Now a thing was fecretly brought to me, and mine ear received a little thereof.

13 In thoughts from the vifions of the night, when deep fleep falleth on men, 14 Fear came upon me, and trembling, which made all my bones to fshake.

15 Then a fpirit paffed before my face; the hair of my flesh stood up.

16 It stood still, but I

19 How much less in them that dwell in houfes of clay, whofe foundation is in the duft, which are crushed before the moth?

20 They are destroyed from morning to evening: they perifh for ever without any regarding it.

21 Doth not their excellency which is in them go away? they die even without wisdom.
