A city that is fet on an hill cannot be hid. Pharifees, ye fhall in no cafe enter into the kingdom of heaven. 21 Ye have heard that it was faid by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whofoever fhall kill, shall be in danger of the judgement : 22. Think not that I am come to deftroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. 18 For verily I fay unto you, Till heaven and earth pafs, one jot or one tittle fhall in no wife pafs from the law, till all be fulfilled. the judgement: and whofoever fhall fay to his brother, Raca, fhall be in danger of the council: but whofoever fhall fay, Thou fool, fhall be in danger of hell fire. 23 Therefore, if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there remembereft that thy brother hath ought againft thee; 24 Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. 25 Agree with thine adverfary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him: left at any time the adverfary de 19 Whofoever therefore fhall break one of these leaft commandments, and fhall teach men fo, he fhall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whofo-liver thee to the judge, and the ever fhall do, and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I fay unto you, That except your righteouf judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be caft into prifon. 26 Verily I fay unto thee, Thou fhalt by no means come come out thence, till thou haft paid the uttermoft farthing. 27 Ye have heard that it was faid by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: 28 But I fay unto you, That whofoever looketh on a woman to luft after her, hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. 29 And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and caft it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members fhould perish, and not that thy whole body should be caft into hell. 30 And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and caft it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members fhould perifh, and not that thy whole body fhould be caft into hell. 35 Nor by the earth, for it is his footstool: neither by Jerufalem, for it is the city of the great King. 36 Neither fhalt thou fwear by thy head, because thou canft not make one hair white or black. 37 But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay; for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil. 38 Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: 39 But I fay unto you, That ye refift not evil: but 31 It hath been faid, Who- whofoever fhall fmite thee foever shall put away his on thy right cheek, turn to wife, let him give her a wri-him the other alfo. ting of divorcement: 32 But I fay unto you, That whofoever fhall put away his wife, faving for the caufe of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whofoever shall marry her that is divorced, committeth adultery. 33 Again, ye have heard that it hath been faid by them 40 And if any man will fue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloke alfo. 41 And whofoever fhall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain. 42 Give to him that asketh thee; and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away. B 2 43 ¶ Ye 43 Ye have heard that a trumpet before thee, as the it hath been faid, Thou shalt hypocrites do, in the synalove thy neighbour, and hate gogues, and in the ftreets, thine enemy. that they may have glory of men. Verily I fay unto you, they have their reward. 44 But I fay unto you, Love your enemies, blefs them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which defpitefully use you, and perfecute you; 45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his fun to rife on the evil and on the good, and fendeth rain on the juft and on the unjust. 3 But when thou doeft alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth : 4 That thine alms may be in fecret: and thy Father which feeth in fecret, himfelf fhall reward thee openly. 5¶ And when thou prayeft, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they. love to pray ftanding in the fynagogues, and in the cor may be feen of men. Verily I fay unto you, they have their reward. 46 For if ye love them which love you, what rewardners of the ftreets, that they have ye do not even the publicans the fame? 47 And if ye falute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans fo? 48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect. 6 But thou, when thou prayeft, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in fecret; and thy Father which feeth in fecret fhall reward thee openly. 7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they fhall be heard for their much speaking. 8 Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of before ye ask him, 9 After this manner there fore fore pray ye: Our Father | felves treafures upon earth, which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. 10 Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. II Give us this day our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. -14 For, if ye forgive men their trefpaffes, your heavenly Father will also forgive you : 15 But if ye forgive not men their trefpaffes, neither will your Father forgive your trefpaffes. 16 Moreover, when ye faft, be not as the hypocrites, of a fad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to faft. Verily I fay unto you, they have their reward. 17 But thou, when thou fafteft, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; where moth and ruft doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal : 20 But lay up for yourfelves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor ruft doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal : 21 For where your treafure is, there will your heart be alfo. 22 The light of the body is the eye if therefore thine eye be fingle, thy whole body fhall be full of light. 23 But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body fhall be full of darknefs. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness! 24 No man can serve two mafters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or elfe he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot ferve God and mammon. 25 Therefore I fay unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye fhall eat, or what ye fhall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye fhall put on: Is not the life more than meat, and the bo 18 That thou appear not unto men to faft, but unto thy Father which is in fecret: and thy Father which feeth in fecret fhall reward theedy than raiment? openly. 19 Lay not up for your 26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they fow not, neither B 3. do |
