of heaven is like a grain of mustard, that a man took and sowed in his field. 32 It is, indeed, the least of all seeds; but when it is grown it is the largest of garden-plants, and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and roost in its branches.

33 He spoke another parable to them: The kingdom of heaven is like leaven which a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, till the whole was leavened.

34 All these things Jesus spoke to the multitudes in parables, and without a parable he did not speak to them; 35 that the word might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying: I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things that have been kept secret from the foundation of the world.

36 Then Jesus left the multitudes, and went into the house. And his disciples came to him and said: Explain to us the parable of the tares of the field. 37 He answered and said to them: He that sows the good seed is the Son of man; 88 the field is the world; the good seed are the sons of the kingdom; the tares are the sons of the Wicked One; 39 the enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the age; and the reapers are angels. 40 As, therefore, the tares are collected and burned in fire, so shall it be in the end of this age. 41 The Son of man will send forth his angels, and collect out of his kingdom all things that offend, and those who work iniquity, 42 and cast them into the furnace of fire; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 43 Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun, in the kingdom of their Father. He that has ears to hear, let him hear.

44 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hid in a field, which, when a man finds it, he hides; and for the joy it gives, he goes and sells all that he has, and buys that field.

45 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking goodly pearls. 46 When he finds one pearl of great value, he goes and sells all that he has, and buys it.

47 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that is cast into the sea, and that gathers of every kind: 48 when it is full, they draw it to the shore; and sitting down, they collect the good into vessels, but throw the bad away. 49 So shall it be in the end of the age: the angels shall come forth and separate the wicked from among the just, 50 and cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

51 Jesus said to them: Have you understood all these things?

They said to him: Yes, Lord. 52 He said to them: Therefore, every scribe that is trained for the kingdom of heaven, is like the master of a house, who brings out of his treasury things new and old.

53 And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished these parables, he departed from that place. And he came into his own country, and taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished, and said: Whence has this man this wisdom, and these mighty works? 55 Is not this the son of the carpenter? Is not his mother called Mary? and his brothers, James and Joses and Simon and Judas? 56 And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence, then, has this man all these things?... And they found in him occasion for offense. But Jesus said to them: A prophet is not without honor, unless it be in his own country and in his own house. 58 And he did not many mighty works there, on account of their unbelief.

XIV. 1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus; 2 and he said to his servants: This is John the Immerser; he has risen from the dead; and for this reason the powers of he spiritual world are active within him.

3 For Herod had laid hold of John, and bound him, and put im in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip. 4 For John said to him: It is not lawful for you to ave her. 5 And he intended to put him to death, but feared he multitude, because they regarded him as a prophet. 6 But hen Herod's birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias anced in the midst, and pleased Herod. 7 Wherefore he promsed, with an oath, to give her whatever she would ask. 8 And eing previously instigated by her mother, she said: Give me ere in a dish the head of John the Immerser? 9 And the king as grieved: but on account of his oath, and those who reclined t table with him, he commanded it to be given. 10 And he sent ad beheaded John in the prison. 11 And his head was brought a dish, and given to the maiden: and she carried it to her other. 12 And his disciples came and took away the body, and iried it; and went and told Jesus.

13 And when Jesus heard of it, he withdrew from that place, ship, into a desert place apart: and the multitudes, when ey heard of his departure, followed him, on foot, from the cities. 14 And when Jesus came out, he saw a great multitude, and is moved with compassion for them, and cured their sick.

15 And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, and said: this is a desert place, and the hour is now past; send the multitudes away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves food. 16 But Jesus said to them: They need not go away; do you give them food. 17 They said to him: We have here but five loaves and two fishes. 18 He said: Bring them hither to me. 19 And he commanded the multitudes to recline upon the grass: and he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looked up to heaven, and blessed, and broke, and gave the bread to the disciples, and the disciples gave it to the multitudes. 20 And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up what remained of the broken pieces, twelve baskets full. 21 And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

22 And he immediately constrained his disciples to get into the ship, and go before him to the opposite side, while he sent the multitudes away. 23 And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into the mountain apart to pray. And when evening came, he was there alone. 24 But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed by the waves, for the wind was against them.

25 And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. 26 And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were alarmed, and said: It is a specter! and they cried out for fear. 27 But Jesus immediately spoke to them, and said: Take courage; it is I; be not afraid. 28 And Peter answered him, and said: Lord, if it be thou, bid me come to thee on the water. 29 And he said: Come. And Peter went down from the ship, and walked upon the water to go to Jesus 30 But when he saw the wind strong, he was afraid; and begin ning to sink, he cried out, saying: Lord, save me. 31 An Jesus immediately stretched out his hand, and took hold of him, and said to him: O you of little faith, why did you doubt 32 And when they had entered the ship, the wind ceased. 83 And they that were in the ship came and worshiped him, saying Truly, thou art the Son of God.

34 And when they had passed over, they came into the land o Gennesaret. 35 And when the men of that place had knowledg of him, they sent out into all the neighboring country, and brought to him all that were sick; 36 and besought him tha they might only touch the fringe of his mantle; and as man; as touched were perfectly saved.

XV. 1 Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees that were of Jerusalem, saying: 2 Why do your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they do not wash their hands when they eat bread. But he answered and said to them: And why do you transgress the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? 4 For God commanded, saying, Honor your father and your mother; and, He that curses father or mother shall surely be put to death. 5 But you say, Whoever shall say to his father or his mother, Whatever of mine might profit you, is a gift, he must in no way honor his father or his mother; and you make the commandment of God of no effect for the sake of your tradition. 7 Hypocrites! well did Isaiah prophesy of you, saying, 8 This people draws near to me with their mouth, and honors me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. 9 But in vain do they worship me, teaching precepts, the commandments of men.

10 And he called the multitude to him, and said to them: Hear and understand; 11 That which enters the mouth does not defile the man; but that which comes out of the mouth, this defiles the man.

12 Then came his disciples and said to him: Dost thou know that the Pharisees, when they heard that saying, were offended? 13 But he answered and said: Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted, shall be rooted up. 14 Let them alone; they are blind leaders of the blind; and if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into the pit. 15 But Peter answered and said to him: Explain to us this dark saying. 16 Jesus replied: Are you also yet without understanding? 17 Do you not yet understand that whatever enters the mouth passes into the belly, and is cast out into the sink. 18 But those things which go out from the mouth, come from the heart; and these defile the man. 19 For from the heart come evil reasonings, murders, adulteries, lewd conduct, thefts, false testimonies, impious words. 20 These are the things that defile the man. But to eat with unwashed hands does not defile the man.

21 And Jesus went out thence, and withdrew into the regions of Tyre and Sidon. 22 And behold a woman of Chanaan came out from those borders, and cried to him, saying: Have mercy ›n me, Lord, son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed vith a demon. 23 But he answered her not a word. And his lisciples came and besought him, saying: Send her away, for he cries after us. 24 But he answered and said: I am not sent

but to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 25 But she came and did him homage, saying: Lord, help me. 26 He answered and said: It is not good to take the children's bread, and throw it to the little dogs. 27 She replied: Yes, Lord; and yet thou canst help me; for the little dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from the table of their masters. 28 Then Jesus answered and said to her: O woman, great is your faith; be it to you as you desire. And her daughter was restored to health from that hour. 29 And Jesus departed thence, and came near the sea of Galilee, and went up into the mountain, and sat there. 30 And many multitudes came to him, having with them the lame, the blind, the deaf, the maimed, and many others; and laid them at the feet of Jesus, and he cured them; 31 so that the multitudes were astonished, when they saw the dumb speaking, the maimed whole, the lame walking, and the blind seeing; and they glorified the God of Israel.

32 Then Jesus called his disciples to him, and said: I have compassion on the multitude, because they have been with me. now three days, and have nothing to eat. And I am not willing to send them away fasting, lest they faint on the road. 33 And his disciples said to him: Whence should we have in the desert as many loaves as would satisfy so great a multitude? 34 And Jesus said to them: How many loaves have you? They said: Seven, and a few little fishes. 35 And he commanded the multitude to recline on the ground. 36 And he took the seven loaves and the fishes, and gave thanks, and broke, and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the multitude 37 And they all ate and were satisfied; and they took up wha remained of the broken pieces, seven baskets full. 38 And those who ate were four thousand men, besides women and children And he sent the multitudes away, and entered the ship, and went into the borders of Magdala.

XVI. 1 And the Pharisees and Sadducees came to tempt him and asked him to show them a sign from heaven. 2 But h answered and said to them: When it is evening, you say, Fai weather; for the sky is red. And in the morning, A storn to-day; for the sky is red and lowering. Hypocrites! you know how to judge of the face of the sky; but you can no judge of the signs of the times. 4A wicked and adulterou generation seeks for a sign; and no sign shall be given it bu the sign of Jonah the prophet. And he left them and departed
