A HYMN.

A HYMN.

WHEN Abram gave command
And made his servant swear,
That he should seek in Abram's land
A wife for Isaac there:

At once, we hear him say,
Perhaps she will not come ;
Must Isaac travel all that way
Or shall he stay at home?

The Angel of the Lord

Before thy face shall go; Perform thy oath, obey my word, And thou shalt find it so.

When at the well he pray'd
And certain things requir'd,
Rebekah came, she did and said
All that the man desir'd.

How humble and how kind,
How modest and sincere,
At once Rebekah speaks her mind,
Because her way was clear.

May you like her be blest,

Like her the Lord obey;

Make him your guide, your place of rest,

In ev'ry unknown way.

LECTURE

ABRAHAM'S FAITHFUL SERVANT.

PART THE SECOND.

GEN. 24. 34. And he said, I am Abraham's Servant.

CONCERNING this Man, you have already heard, who it is supposed that he was, and that he was born in Abraham's house, but that his Father was probably a Sy rian of Damascus. That he was a pious good man, that he prayed to God and God heard his prayer. We have seen what confidence Abraham put in this Servant; that all his goods were placed under his charge. We see what an important business Abraham committed to him-That of going to a distant country to obtain a suitable partner for his son. You have heard how Abraham made him take an oath, to do that which he had commanded him. How he set out on his journey, and when he came to the end of it prayed to God for his blessing, requesting that he would give him a particular answer to his petition, which he received exactly according to the very worde

words he had said. You have heard what Rebekah said to him after she had given water to him and his camels, and that he made her a present of a valuable jewel for her fore head, and a pair of golden bracelets for her arms. You have heard him thank God for answering his prayer, and that Rebekah ran home to tell her relations all that she had heard and seen. This you have already heard. You will remember also that Abraham's Servant had inquired of Rebekah whether there was room enough in her father's house for him and his men to lodge. I shall now proceed to give you some more particulars concerning Abraham's Attend therefore while I relate to

you.

I. The RECEPTION that ABRAHAM'S SERVANT met with at Rebekah's house.

And Rebekah had a brother whose name was Laban; and Laban ran out unto the man unto the well. And it came to pass, when he saw the ear-ring and bracelets upon his Sister's hands, and when he heard the words of Rebekah his Sister, saying, Thus spake the man unto me; that he came unto the man, and, behold

he stood by the camels at the well. And he said, Come in thou blessed of the Lord; wherefore standest thou without? for I have prepared the house and room for thy camels, And the man came into the house: and he ungirded the camels and gave straw and provender for the camels, and water to wash his feet and the men's feet that were with him. And there was set meat before him to eat."

Laban when he saw what a valuable pre sent his sister had received, went and invited the man to the house. Laban's character was such that there is reason to believe he would not have given this man such a welcome RECEPTION if he had not thought that he should be a gainer by his kindness. He cal led him blessed of the Lord, was it because he was rich, or because he had heard of his piety from Rebekah? Know this my dear young friends, that it is the blessing of the Lord that maketh rich and addeth no sorrow therewith. The present which Abraham's servant had giv en to Rebekah prepared the way to her father's house and the way to Laban's heart. A man's gift maketh room for him. The house and stable was well furnished with food for man and
