to the grace given to us, &c., &c." Observe, multitudes of individuals, with each his own mind and will, are, in Christ-made to be, to act, to feel, to think, to believe, to know, and to desire, as one body; yet are they one, by each being put into Christ; and then by Christ, joined to, and made members incorporate of each, all, and altogether; yet each receiving, retaining, and exercising his own peculiar gifts, of grace and ministry; each differing according to the grace given to each; yet each co-operating together with all, and for all. Nothing is such a witness to, and prophecy of, the mystery of the Church, as the human body in the marvellous unity, organization, symmetry, proportion, subordination, freedom, and co-operation of its different members and parts;-ruled over and governed by the concentrated energies of its head, inspired and energized by the human soul, and indwelt, inhabited, and used by the human Spirit. Oh that christian men would rise up from the study of physiology, or the doctrine of nature-into the study, of that mystery, of which all organized forms of life are but the types and prophecies;-even the mystery of the living Body of Christ; -ruled over and governed by ONE LORD.-energized, inspired, and glorified, by ONE SPIRIT,-indwelt and inhabited for Eternal fellowship and communion, by ONE GOD AND FATHER OF ALL. What ruin and disorder reign in the old Creation, by reason of its apostacy from God; but what far greater ruin and disorder now reign in the new creation, because of her departure from her first estate and vocation! Christian men see and acknowledge the one, but refuse to see and confess the other, Selfish schismatic individualism, will break, and is breaking all the bands and joints, of christian corporate unity! The one sole cause is, ceasing to abide in the Baptism of the Spirit.

1 Cor. i. 4—9.-Observe the effects of the Baptism of the Holy Ghost upon the Corinthian Church, as distributed and imparted through the Apostle Paul. They were enriched thereby "in all utterance, and in all knowledge." The testimony concerning Christ Jesus whom they had not seen,-whom Paul and Apollos proclaimed to their faith and affections, was confirmed in them." He could say that they came behind in no gift." He could further add, that they were, in this state and condition, "waiting for the Coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.' And he speaks with confidence, that the Lord would so continue to confirm them onwards unto the end; that they may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ." And in all this the Apostle sees the faithfulness of God to him and to them; who had so called them into the fellowship and communion

of His Son Jesus Christ. Utterance-knowledge-strengtheningconfirmation—fulness of spiritual gifts—waiting in patient hope for the Lord's return—and blameless readiness when that day shall come; these were effects partly enjoyed by this Church, and partly anticipated by St. Paul, as the necessary consequences of that Baptism of the Spirit, which had been distributed to them, by his ministry. Like effects spring from the same cause. If we would have our silent tongues unstrung to utterance, or our doubts and questionings turned to knowledge; if we would have our weakness invigorated with spiritual strength, or our idolatry of intellect, learning, eloquence, money, and of earthly glory and power,-supplanted by the possession of Spiritual Gifts; if we would have our earthly hopes and fears, swallowed up by the living hope of the Lord's second appearing and kingdom, or our cowardly shrinking from the cross, overcome, by a stern inflexible desire to be approved faithful and blameless in His sight; then, as one man, we must again seek and desire,—aud give God no rest till we obtain and experience,-the full Baptism of the Holy Spirit.

1 Cor. ii. 9—16.—The Baptism of the Spirit, had the effect in the Corinthians, of revealing to them and enabling them to discern, all Spiritual and heavenly things;-things, which neither natural sense nor reason, could have enabled them to discern or receive. They were thereby enabled in the Spirit, to discern,-the deep and profound mysteries, and things of God. They were enabled to discern-Persons, things, and Substances, of which the Princes and Philosophers of this world, were not able to gain a single glimpse; but which they in the Anointing of the Spirit saw, heard, knew, and consciously enjoyed.

carrying onward till completion,-of the whole plan and purpose of God, therein to be effected. The whole superstructure, and the parts and details, are committed to them; and by them to under builders employed and commissioned by them. The master builders are required not only to see that the foundations are laid in truth and firmness, but also for the edification and completion of the whole fabric. They are primarily responsible, for the selection of fit and proper materials-for the unity and agreement of all the parts with the whole, and for the agreement of the whole with that plan and purpose, which the Divine Architect has formed in Himself-before all worlds. It is only a truth-i.e., a thing according to rule and plan, as it can bear Jehovah's presence, as it is fit for His abode and use,—and as it can be used according to His will and design. The purpose of God in the Church is an Eternal, unalterable, and unchangeable plan and purpose. No man may or can glory; for nothing is left to his wit. No man can suggest a thought of improvement, or give a wiser counsel to God. No man shall be able to say, -"I have done it!" Christ is the Architect; but He is also the Chief Corner Stone; and the Crowning top stone; this is His one continuous and eternal place, function, and office. Apostles are master builders; but, with Prophets they are also foundation stones. As the functions of the Lord are Eternally continuous and necessary, so theirs also are equally eternal, necessary, and continuous. work to be done now, is to build up the superstructure; that it may appear in all its symmetry, proportion, strength, and beauty. There may be no coming short; and there may be no exaggeration; for God is an Architect who builds by exact measure, and number. HE WILL NEITHER WITNESS TO, NOR SEAL, A LIEAN UNTRUTH! He will only acknowledge and own-inward and outward truth! The full glory can never enter in, till every stone and pillar be set in order in its place--according to His purpose before the world began. The time comes (the time of the end), when God will try every man's work; from the greatest to the least. He will try it both in degree and kind. He will try every part by measure and by fire. The measure is the rule of His revealed purpose. The fire is His own glorious presence.

His glory will fill and try the house; and will prove the materials. His presence will purify or consume. It will purify, and glorify ;the gold, silver, and precious stones: it will consume the wood, the hay, and stubble. The Baptism of the Holy Ghost returning into and upon the Church, will be either for her greatest blessing or her
