The plan of the book assumes a general knowledge of Biblical history on the part of the reader; hence the abbreviation of quotations by ellipses of unessential words, and thereby a condensation of the volume. To lessen the time employed in seeking illustrations from these pages, a catch-word printed in italics follows the title of each article. By this means the quotation will usually be suggested without reading it. Sometimes the catch-word supplies an explanatory term. In place of a general index, a system of cross-references is adopted, which will enable the reader to find without index-turning, where in this work topics of like import are illustrated, and a line of catch-words gives a key to each quotation referred to. This feature greatly increases the amount of illustrative materials, and at the same time facilitates their speedy selection. The textual index will show where any particular verse is used in this volume. If this compilation shall be of practical service, in the hands of those for whom it has been prepared, the author will be satisfied with his humble endeavor. NEWARK, N. J., Sept. 20th, 1883.
