measures of oil. And he said unto him, Take thy bill, and sit down quickly, and write fifty. Afterwards to another he said, How much owest thou? He said, A hundred measures of wheat. And he said unto him, Take thy bill, and write eighty.

And the lord [of the steward] praised the unjust steward, because he had acted prudently: for the children of this world are more prudent in their generation than the children of light. Yet I say unto you, He who is faithful in least is faithful also in much: and he who is unjust in least is unjust also in much.

And behold one came and said unto him, Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life? And he said unto him, Why askest thou me about the good? There is One Good [ask Him]. But if thou desirest to enter into life, keep the commandments. He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy

neighbour as thyself. The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept what lack I yet? Jesus said unto him, If thou desirest to be perfect, go sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me. But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.

Then Jesus said to his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man will with difficulty enter into the kingdom of heaven. Again, I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of heaven.

When his disciples heard it, they were exceedingly amazed, saying, Who then can be saved? But Jesus looked at them, and said, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.

CHAPTER XXIX.

THE kingdom of heaven is like a householder, who went out in the morning to hire labourers for his vineyard. And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard. And he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the market-place, and said unto them; Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I will give you. And they went.

Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour, and did likewise. And about the eleventh he went out, and found others standing, and saith unto them, Why stand ye here all the day idle? They say unto him, No man hath hired us. He saith unto them, Go ye also into the vineyard.

In the evening the lord of the vineyard saith to his steward, Call the labourers, and pay the wages, beginning from the last unto the first.

And those who came about the

eleventh hour received a penny.

And those

who came first supposed that they should receive more; but they also received a penny. And on receiving it, they murmured against the householder, saying, These last have worked one hour, and thou hast made them equal to us, who have borne the burden and heat of the day. But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst thou not agree with me for a penny? Take thine own, and go thy way I desire to give unto this last, even as unto thee. Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with my own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good? So the last will be first, and the first last.

Then were brought to him little children, that he might put his hands on them, and pray; and the disciples rebuked them. But Jesus said, Let the little children come to me, and forbid them not; for of such is the kingdom of heaven. And he laid his hands on them, and departed thence.

CHAPTER XXX.

THEN came to him the mother of Zebedee's children with her sons, making obeisance, and asking something from him. And he said unto her, What dost thou desire? She saith unto him, Say that these my two sons may sit, one on thy right hand, and the other on thy left, in thy kingdom. But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink the cup that I shall drink? They say unto him, We are able. He saith to them, Ye will drink of my cup: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but is for those for whom it is prepared by my Father.

And when the ten heard it, they were angry with the two brethren. But Jesus called them and said, Ye know that the rulers of the Gentiles are masters over them, and the great exercise authority over them. Not thus shall it be among you: but whosoever desires to be great
