saw him, he passed by on the other side. And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and saw him, and passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him, and went, and bound up his wounds, pouring over oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence and gave to the host, and said, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, I will repay thee on my return. Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour to him. that fell among the thieves? And he said, he

that shewed mercy on him.

Then said Jesus

unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.

CHAPTER XXIV.

Now it came to pass as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.

And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word. But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art anxious and troubled about many things; but one thing is needful: Mary hath chosen the good part, which will not be taken away from her.

And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples. And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Father, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Give us day by day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation [or, bring us not into trial].

And he said unto them, Who among you shall have a friend, and shall go to him at midnight, and say to him, Friend, lend me three loaves; for a friend of mine is come to me from

a journey, and I have nothing to set before. him? And he from within shall answer and say, Trouble me not: the door is now shut, and my children with me are in bed; I cannot rise and give thee. I say unto you, even if he will not rise and give to him, because he is his friend, at any rate on account of his shamelessness, he will rise and give him as many as he needeth.

And I say unto you, Ask, and it will be given you; seek, and ye will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it will be opened. If a son shall ask bread of one of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent? or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children; how much more will the heavenly Father give a holy spirit to them that ask him?

CHAPTER XXV.

AND one of the crowd said unto him, Teacher, command my brother to divide the inheritance with me. And he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you? And he said unto them, See, and guard against all covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.

And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully and he was taking account within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have nowhere to gather together my fruits? And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast many goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. But God said unto him, Foolish man, this night they demand thy life from thee:

whose shall the things be, which thou hast provided? So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.

ye

And he said also to the crowds, When ye see a cloud rise out of the west, straightway ye say, There cometh a shower; and so it is. And when the south wind blows, ye say, There will be heat; and it cometh to pass. Ye hypocrites, know how to examine the face of the earth and the heaven; how is it ye do not examine this time? And why even of yourselves judge ye not what is right? For as thou goest with thine adversary to the magistrate, on the road, take pains to be delivered from him; lest he drag thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and the officer cast thee into prison. I tell thee, thou wilt not depart thence, till thou hast paid the very last mite.

CHAPTER XXVI.

THEN drew near to him all the publicans and sinners to hear him. And the Pharisees and
