kingdom of heaven is like a householder, who bringeth out of his treasury things new and old.

And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished these parables, he departed thence. And when he was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these powers? Is not this the carpenter's son? Is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joseph, and Simon, and Judas? And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath he all these things? And they took offence at him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house.

CHAPTER XVIII.

AT that time Herod the tetrarch [i.e. Herod Antipas, son of Herod the Great] heard of the fame of Jesus, and said unto his servants, This

is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead; and therefore the powers work in him. For Herod had laid hold of John, and bound him, and put him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife. And he had sent, and beheaded John in the prison. And his disciples went, and took the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus. When Jesus heard it, he departed thence by boat into a desert place apart and when the people heard this, they followed him on foot from the cities.

And going forth, he saw a great crowd, and he was moved with compassion for them, and healed their sick. And when it was dusk, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the day time is now past; send the crowds away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals. But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart ; give ye them to eat. And they say unto him, We have here only five loaves, and two fishes. He said, Bring them here to me. And he commanded the crowds to lie on the grass, and took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to

heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to the disciples, and the disciples to the crowds.

And straightway he made the disciples get into a boat, and go before him to the other side, while he sent the crowds away. And when he had sent the crowds away, he went up a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone. And when they were gone over, they came into the land of Gennesaret.

CHAPTER XIX.

THEN came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, from Jerusalem, saying, Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the ancients? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread. But he answered and said to them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that revileth father or mother, let him

die the death. But ye say, Whosoever shall say to father or mother, That (property) by which thou mightest have been helped by me, is a gift to God, need not honour [i.e. help] his father (or mother). And ye let him do no more for father or mother, setting aside the word of God for the sake of your tradition, which ye have delivered; and many such things do ye. Ye hypocrites, well did Isaiah prophesy of you, saying, This people honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. But in vain they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

And he called the crowds, and said unto them, Hear, and understand: not that which goeth into the mouth defileth the man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth the man.

Then came his disciples, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees took offence, when they heard the saying? But he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, will be rooted up. Let them alone: they are blind leaders of the

blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into the ditch.

CHAPTER XX.

AND the Pharisees and the Sadducees came, and tempting asked him to shew them a sign from heaven. He answered and said to them, (When it is evening, ye say, Fine weather: for the sky is red. And in the morning, Stormy to-day for the sky is red and lowering. Ye know how to judge the face of the sky; but can ye not judge the signs of the times?) A wicked and faithless generation seeketh after a sign; and no sign, save the sign of Jonah, will be given unto it. And he left them, and departed.

And his disciples, on going to the other side, had forgotten to take loaves. Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees. And they were taking account among themselves, saying, We did not take loaves. When Jesus knew this he said, O ye of little faith, why take
