harvest, that he will send forth labourers into

his harvest.

And it came to pass in those days, that he went out to the mountain to pray, and passed the night in prayer to God. And when it was day, he called his disciples, and chose twelve of them, whom also he named apostles. Now the names of the twelve apostles are these; First, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; Philip, and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the publican; James the son of Alphæus, and Lebbæus; Simon the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him.

These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, As ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. Do not provide gold, nor silver, nor copper in your purses, nor wallet for the journey, neither two coats, neither shoes, nor a staff: for the workman is worthy of his food. And into whatsoever city or town ye enter, enquire who in it is worthy; and there abide till ye go thence.

And when ye go into a house, salute it. And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it: but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you.

CHAPTER XI.

BEHOLD, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves. But beware of men: for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues; and ye will be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony to them and to the Gentiles. But when they deliver you up, take no anxious thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that hour what ye shall speak. For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father that speaketh in you.

And brother will deliver up brother to death, and father child: and children will rise up against parents, and put them to death. And ye will be hated by all for my name's sake: but he that endureth to the end will be saved.

But when they persecute you in this city, flee ye into another. The disciple is not above the teacher, nor the slave above his lord. It is enough for the disciple that he be as his teacher, and the slave as his lord. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more them of his household ?

Fear them not therefore: for there is nothing covered, that will not be uncovered; and hid, that will not be known. Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and not one of them will fall on the ground without your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.

He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me. He that findeth his life will lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake will find it.

He that receiveth you receiveth me, and he that receiveth me receiveth Him that sent me.

He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet [i.e. because he is a prophet] will receive a prophet's reward; and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man will receive a righteous man's reward. And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he will in no wise lose his reward.

CHAPTER XII.

AND it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities. And the multitude cometh together again, so that they could not even eat bread. And when his relations heard of it, they set out to lay hold on him; for they said, he is beside himself.

And Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the

wind? But what went ye out to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they that wear soft raiment are in kings' houses. But what went ye out to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet. Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist; but he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

But whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like children sitting in the markets, and calling unto their companions, saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented. For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, he hath an evil spirit. The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a glutton, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom was justified by her children [or, by her works].

Then he began to upbraid the cities wherein most of his powers were (exerted), because they repented not: Woe to thee, Chorazin ! Woe to thee, Bethsaida! for if the powers
