cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye

shall know them.

CHAPTER VIII.

NOT every one who saith unto me, Lord, Lord, will enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father who is in heaven. Therefore whosoever heareth these words from me, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, who built his house upon the rock and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon the rock. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, will be likened unto a foolish man, who built his house upon the sand and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell and great was the fall of it.

:

And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his

teaching for he taught them as one having authority and not as their scribes.

When he was come down from the mountain great multitudes followed him. And when Jesus saw great multitudes about him, he gave commandment to depart unto the other side. And a scribe came, and said unto him, Teacher, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest. And Jesus saith unto him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air nests; but the Son of man hath not where he may lay his head. And another of his disciples said unto him, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. Jesus said unto him, Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead; but go thou and preach the kingdom of God. And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid farewell to those in my house. And Jesus said, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

CHAPTER IX.

AND it came to pass, as the crowd pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret, and saw two boats standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing the nets. And he entered into one of the boats, which was Simon's, and asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the crowd out of the boat. Now when he had left off speaking, he said unto Simon, Put out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing but at thy word I will let down the net. And when they had done this, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and the net began to break. And they beckoned to their partners, who were in the other boat, to come and help them. And they came, and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. When

Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord. For astonishment seized him, and all that were with him, and likewise James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men. And when they had brought their boats on shore, they forsook all, and followed him.

And as Jesus passed forth thence, he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom [i.e. at the custom-house]: and he saith unto him, Follow me. And he arose, and followed him. And it came to pass, as he reclined at table in the house, behold, many publicans and sinners came and reclined with him and his disciples. And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, Why eateth your teacher with publicans and sinners? But when he heard it, he said, They that are strong need not a physician, but they that are sick. But go ye and learn what this meaneth,

I desire mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners.

No one putteth a piece of new cloth unto an old garment, for that which is put in to fill it up taketh from the garment, and a worse rent is made. Neither do they put new wine into old bottles [i.e. wine skins]: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved.

CHAPTER X.

AND Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all (kinds of) sickness and weakness. And when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion for them, because they were troubled and prostrate, as sheep having no shepherd. Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; pray ye therefore the Lord of the
