THE LIBRARY MAGAZINE was originally started as a monthly, at ten cents a number, $1.00 a year, its contents being limited to choice selections from English and continental magazines and reviews, thus occupying a field similar to the old and excellent Littell's Living Age and Eclectic Magazine, discarding, however, all fiction and distinctively light literature, and supplying the very best that they contain, at about one fourth their cost. In consonance with the maxim, "what is worth reading is worth preserving,” a form of publication was adopted with a special view to convenience for reference and binding, and beginning with September, 1880, each issue forms a complete bound volume. This innovation is recognized as being of very great value to real students of literature. ; Beginning with the issue for December, 1880, American topics, treated by American thinkers and writers of established reputation in literature, are introduced. THE LIBRARY MAGAZINE undertakes to occupy so high a stand that it shall be considered an indispensable part of the library of every American who aspires to the broadest culture, and desires to keep fully abreast with the progress of American and transatlantic thought. The contents of any volume will indicate how well it succeeds in this ambitious attempt. Andrew, John Albion.
