IT is a consequence of the publication of a Work of the nature of the Memoirs of Lord Kames, of which one principal aim was to give a view of the Progress of Literature and General Improvement in Scotland, during the greater part of the last century, to draw forth from various quarters additional information, consisting both of facts, and opinions relative to the subject treated of. This advantage has been felt to a considerable extent by the Author, who has been thus enabled to make those additions, and corrections, which form the present Supplement ; and he conceived himself bound in duty to the Purchasers of the Work, to publish it in this separate form, that it may be bound up with the quarto volumes. The Manuscript Memoirs of the late Reverend Dr ALEXANDER CARLYLE, and some MS. collections made by the late JAMES BOSWELL, Esq; (who at one time was preparing materials for a Life of Lord Kames), have furnished the greater part of the additional literary anecdotes contained in the following sheets. To the Executors and Trustees of those two Gentlemen, who with great liberality communicated those interesting Papers, the Author owes his best thanks.
