Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. But 14
John would have hindered him, saying, I have
need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou
to me? But Jesus answering said unto him, 15

Suffer 1it now: for thus it becometh us to
fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffereth him.
And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up 16
straightway from the water and lo, the hea-
vens were opened unto him, and he saw the
Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming
upon him; and lo, a voice out of the heavens, 17
saying, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I
am well pleased.

Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the 14
wilderness to be tempted of the devil. And 2
when he had fasted forty days and forty nights,
he afterward hungered. And the tempter came 3
and said unto him, If thou art the Son of God,
command that these stones become bread.
But he answered and said, It is written, Man 4
shall not live by bread alone, but by every
word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
Then the devil taketh him into the holy city; 5
and he set him on the pinnacle of the temple,
and saith unto him, If thou art the Son of God, 6
cast thyself down for it is written,

He shall give his angels charge concerning

thee:

And on their hands they shall bear thee up,
Lest haply thou dash thy foot against a

stone.

Jesus said unto him, Again it is written, Thou 7 shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. Again, the 8 devil taketh him unto an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; and he said unto 9 him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. Then saith 10

Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy II God, and him only shalt thou serve. Then the devil leaveth him; and behold, angels came and ministered unto him.

Now when he heard that John was delivered 13 up, he withdrew into Galilee; and leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the borders of Zebulun and 14 Naphtali: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken 1by Isaiah the prophet, saying,

Saw a great light,

And to them which sat in the region and
shadow of death,

To them did light spring up.

From that time began Jesus to preach, and to say, Repent ye; for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

And walking by the sea of Galilee, he saw two brethren, Simon who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; 19 for they were fishers. And he saith unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you fishers 20 of men. And they straightway left the nets, 21 and followed him. And going on from thence

boat and their father, and followed him.
And Jesus went about in all Galilee, teaching
in their synagogues, and preaching the gos-

disease and all manner of sickness among the people. And the report of him went forth 24 into all Syria and they brought unto him all that were sick, holden with divers diseases and torments, 1possessed with devils, and epileptic, and palsied; and he healed them. And there 25 followed him great multitudes from Galilee and Decapolis and Jerusalem and Judæa and from beyond Jordan.

And seeing the multitudes, he went up into 1 5 the mountain: and when he had sat down, his disciples came unto him: and he opened his 2 mouth and taught them, saying,

Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is 3 the kingdom of heaven.

2 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall 4 be comforted.

Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit 5 the earth.

Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after 6 righteousness for they shall be filled.

Blessed are the merciful: for they shall 7 obtain mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall 8 see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall 9 be called sons of God.

Blessed are they that have been persecuted 10 for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye when men 11 shall reproach you, and persecute you, and say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad for great is 12 your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt 13 have lost its savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but

to be cast out and trodden under foot of men. 14 Ye are the light of the world. A city set on 15 a hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a lamp, and put it under the bushel, but on the stand; and it shineth unto all that are in the 16 house. Even so let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

17 Think not that I came to destroy the law or the prophets: I came not to destroy, but to 18 fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass away from the law, till all things be 19 accomplished. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, he shall be called great in the 20 kingdom of heaven. For I say unto you, that except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no wise enter into the kingdom of heaven.

21 Ye have heard that it was said to them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall 22 kill shall be in danger of the judgement: but I say unto you, that every one who is angry with his brother1 shall be in danger of the judgement; and whosoever shall say to his brother, 2Raca, shall be in danger of the council; and whosoever shall say, 3 Thou fool, shall be in danger 23 of the hell of fire. If therefore thou art of fering thy gift at the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath aught against thee, 24 leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way, first be reconciled to thy brother, and then 25 come and offer thy gift. Ye have heard that it was said, Thou shalt 27 not commit adultery: but I say unto you, that 28 every one that looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. And if thy right eye causeth thee 29 to stumble, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not thy whole body be 2 Gr. And if thy right hand causeth 30 thee to stumble, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not thy whole body go into hell. It was said also, Whosoever shall 31 put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement: but I say unto you, that every 32 one that putteth away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, maketh her an adulteress: and whosoever shall marry her when she is put away committeth adultery.

Again, ye have heard that it was said to 33 them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths but I say unto you, Swear not at all; 34 neither by the heaven, for it is the throne of God; nor by the earth, for it is the footstool of 35 his feet; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. Neither shalt thou swear by 36 thy head, for thou canst not make one hair white or black.
