Roman Catholic writers, Papists "par excellence" who in the 19th century, amidst all the lights and civilization of our day, maintain in so many words, that the Pope is God. Here follows the whole passage:

T

"When we speak of the Roman Pontiffs, we also understand the universal church; because as Cardinal Litta has well shewn, the teaching of the Pope, and that of the church form only one and the same doctrine. All the promises made to the Apostles, in whose college Peter is comprised, are made also to Peter alone; if he has said to the former, "that which you shall loose," it has been said to Peter in the very same terms" that which thou shalt loose;" but adds the same Cardinal," It is God that has made those promises-God cannot be contrary to himself-truth is one-consequently according to the saying of St. Francis De Sales, the Pope and the church are one."

We add a reflection which is suggested to us by Mr. Drach in his second letter of a converted Rabbi :

"One of the names of the Messiah, (says this learned Israelite, destined by God without doubt, to bring back to the truth his erring brethren) which expresses best all the characters which we observe in his adorable person, is that of Petrus-you have seen in the first letter, that in this word we find the Hebrew names of the Father, the Son, of this ineffable link of love which connects the two. In the Old Testament, Jehovah is frequently called Petrus.* But since the name Petrus is that of God, and contains as well as Jehovah those persons of the Deity-why bas Jesus Christ given it to the prince of the Apostles? has he not hereby shown that this supreme shepberd whom he has given to the flock to guide it unto the end of time, was no other than himself, rendered thus visible in the person of the Sacred Pontiff ? In fact the prophets had announced, that the sole guide who was to govern Israel to the end of time, was no other than

Jehovah; and Jesus Christ has perfectly expounded these oracles, in bestowing on Simon this august name-and in saying to him thrice in the presence of all the Apostles-" feed my sheep -feed my lambs." The whole church has proclaimed this belief, in declaring in the 8th Ecumenical Council, that the Christian faith has been kept pure and spotless in the apostolical chain. Now, in order never to have erred in the faith, it must never have for an instant abandoned the truth, and truth is God --nothing then is truer than that saying of Augustine,† which heretofore we have quoted, "that when the pontiff pronounces, it is not he that speaks but God, who has fixed the doctrine of truth in the chair of unity."

PRUSSIA.

Instruction of the Jews in Christianity. A great number of the Jews of the Grand Duchy of Posen, have lately come to Berlin to be instructed in Christianity; the greater part of them, have for the first time been made attentive to the Gospel of Jesus Christ by the missionaries Huendes and Ball, whom the Prussian Society for the conversion of the Jews has sent out in their native country. After the departure of the missionaries from the places in which these proselytes dwell, these last, deprived of all religious support, and feeling withal the need of knowing better this doctrine of salvation which they had heard preached, often determine to seek at a distance more complete instruction, and naturally select Berlin as their new places of residence, because they know it to be the central point in Germany, from whence issue the efforts to lead Israel to the knowledge of the Messiah. The Committee of the Society considering the great number of Jews who desire instruction, and the difficulty which exists against their attaining it from the ordinary pastors, whose occupations are already so multiplied, have solicited his majesty the King

Deaf and Dumb Institution.- An extremely crowded and respectable meeting of the friends and subscribers to this valuable Institution, was held on Monday at the Rotunda. The space at the upper part of the platform was occupied by the pupils, all of whom presented a most healthy, cheerful and cleanly appearance. The Chair was taken, at half-past 12 o'clock, by Rear Admiral Oliver. Dr. Orpen, as Secretary, having read the Report of the Society's proceedings for the past year, Mr. Humphreys, the head master, proceeded with the examination of the pupils. He put several very intricate questions, the answers to which were all given with the most surprising accuracy and despatch. The question was written down, in the first instance on an elevated tablet of wood, placed in such a situation that the whole assembly could see the words, and the reply afterwards written underneath by the pupil in a plain, clear, and legible hand. The examination having closed, the Rev. Messrs. D. Studdert Massey, Adams, and other Gentlemen, addressed themselves to the succeeding resolutions. The proceedings of the day were closed by a very eloquent speech from the Rev. R. Pope.

London Hibernian School Society. The Anniversay Meeting of the Dublin Auxiliary to this Society was held at the Rotunda, on Thursday the 2d of April, 1829; Lord Viscount Castlemaine in the Chair.

Mr. Hume, one of the Secretaries, read the Report of the proceedings of the Society for the past year, by which it appeared that there was an increase of 306 schools and 9118 scholars over the preceding year, making the whole number of schools in connection with the Institution 1352, containing 76,444 scholars that it has circulated during the year 22966 copies of the Holy Scriptures, making the total gratuitous distribution of the Society, 209,395 copies. That it employed within the year sixtysix persons as general and cursory inspectors and Scripture readers, making an increase in this department of the Society's labours of seventeen within the last year.

The return of the schools and scholars enrolled are

Day schools, 630-Scholars, 47,916 Roman Catholics, 19,793--Protestants, 28,123. Adult schools, 261Scholars, 10,864. Sunday Schools, 408 - Scholars, 16,740. Irish classes, 53 - Scholars, 924. Total Schools, 1,352. Total Scholars, 76,444.

It is observed that many of the Sunday school scholars are also enrolled in the day schools, so that the average attendance at one period would probably not materially exceed two thirds of the gross numbers.

The Report gave a most encouraging account of the success of the Society in every department of its labours, and stated, that nothing tended to repress its congratulatory language but the circumstance of the means of bestowing not being proportioned to the demand for Scriptural education; and it made a strong and forcible appeal to all persons interested in promoting the moral and religious improvement of Ireland, to assist in furthering its beneficial objectsdeduced many testimonies in favour of the Society, from clergymen of different denominations, who were acquainted with its operations, and brought forward applications from even the Roman Catholic poor themselves, entreating the extension of the benefits of Scriptural education to their children. It appeared that though the Society's income bad equalled that of former years, yet, from the enlargement of its operations, its ex

VIEW OF PUBLIC AFFAIRS.

The political revolution, which it has been the singular fortune of the Duke of Wellington and Mr. Peel to achieve, has been received with less demonstration either of exultation or regret than we had anticipated. The Roman Catholics most wisely have restrained their feelings, and their Protestant opponents have not exhibited theirs. We trust

that the period is not far distant when all merely political feeling will be merged in general affection to the common weal: and while we hope that Protestants will never lose sight of the important differences existing between their churches, nor of the essential character of Popery, the feelings of Roman Catholics, liberalized by mingling with Protestants, won by conciliation and confidence, and emancipated from the connection with their priests, which their so called degradation produced, will be prepared to throw off the yoke of priestly domination and to receive the liberty of the Gospel. The duke of Norfolk and some other peers have taken their seats in the upper house; but we believe that Lord Surry is the only Roman Catholic who has been admitted to the lower.

Mr. O'Connell has been refused the privilege of sitting on taking the new oath, as he had been elected previous to the passing the relief act, and the refusal forms a fair comment on that gentleman's assertion and promises. The two Education Societies, Kildareplace, and the Association, have received their grants from Parliament; and Maynooth has also obtained the usual sum. We are glad to perceive that this last grant excited a considerable sensation: many of the warmest adherents of minority protested against it, and we trust that no succeeding session will be stained by an act which connects indeed the constitution with Popery, and links Protestantism with idolatry and error.

We regret to perceive that the commercial affairs, not of our country alone, but of all Europe are in considerable confusion.

The benevolence of the public has partially assisted the sufferers, but a permanent relief can only be found in a diminished power of production, or fresh channels being opened for consumption. The war between Turkey and Russia has again revived.
