:19 1" :1": • ראָה יַעֲקב אֶת־רָחֵל בַּת־לָבָן אֲהִי אִמוֹ וְאֶת־צאן לָבָן אֲחִי אִמְוֹ וַיגש יעקב ויגל אֶת־הָאֶבֶן מֵעַל פִּי הַבְּאֵר וַיִּשְׁקְ אֶת־צאן לָבָן אֲחִי אִמְוֹ : 11 וַיְשַׁק יֶעֶקֶב לְרָחֵל וַיִּשָּׂא אֶת־קלוֹ וַיִּבְךְ: 12 ויגד יַעֲקב לְרָחֵל כִּי אֲחִי אָבִיהָ הוּא וְכִי בֶן־־רְבָקָה הִוּא וַתָּרָץ וַתַּבֵּךְ לְאָבִיהָ : 13 וַיְהִי כִשְׁמַע לָבָן אֶת־שָׁמַע יַעֲקֹב בֶּן־ אחתוֹ וַיָּרָץ לִקְרָאתוֹ וַיְחַבֶּק־לוֹ וַיְנַשֶׁק־לוֹ וַיְבִיאֵהוּ אֶל־ בֵּיתוֹ וַיְספַּר לְלָבָן אֵת כָּל־הַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה : 14 וַיֹּאמֶר לוֹ לָבָן אַךְ עַצְמִי וּבְשָׂרִי אָתָּה וַיָּשָׁב עַמּוֹ חֹדֶשׁ יָמִים : 15 וַיֹּאמֶר לָבָן לַעֲקֹב הֲכִי־אָחִי אַתָּה וְעֲבַרְתַּנִי חִנָּם הַגִּידָה לִי מַה־מַשְׂכָּרְתֵּךְ : 16 וּלְלָבָן שְׁתֵּי בָנוֹת שָׁם הַגְּדֹלָה לֵאָה וְשֵׁם הַקְטַנָּה רָחֵל : 17 וְעֵינֵי לֵאָה רַכּוֹת שלישי וְרָחֵל הָיְתָה יְפַת־תְּאַר וִיפַת מַרְאֶה: 18 וַאֲהַב עֶקְב אֶת רָחֵל וַיֹּאמֶר אֵעֶבְדָךְ שֶׁבַע שָׁנִים בְּרָחֵל בִּתִּךְ, הַקְטַנָּה: 19 וַיֹּאמֶר לָבָן טְוֹב תִּתִּי אֹתָהּ לָךְ מִתּתִּי אֹתָהּ לְאִישׁ אַחֵר שְׁבָה עִמָּדִי: 20 ויעֲבָר יַעֲקֹב בְּרָחֵל שֶׁבַע שָׁנִיִם וַיִּהְיוּ בְעֵינָיו כְּיָמִים אֲחָדִים בְּאַהֲבָתוֹ אֹתָהּ: 21 וַיֹּאמֶר יַעֲקב אֶל־לָבָן הָבָה אֶת־אִשְׁתִּי כִּי מָלְאוּ יָמָי וְאָבוֹאָה אֵלֶיהָ: 22 ויאסף לָבָן אֶת־כָּל־ אַנְשֵׁי הַמָּקוֹם וַיַּעַשׂ מִשְׁתֶּה: 23 וַיְהִי בָעֶרֶב וַיִּקַח אֶת־לֵאָה בִתּוֹ וַיָּבֵא אֹתָהּ אֵלָיו וַיְבָא אֵלֶיהָ: 24 וַיִּתֵּן לָבָן לָהּ אֶת־־זִלְפָּה שִׁפְחָתוֹ לְלֵאָה בִתּוֹ שִׁפְחָה : 25 וַיְהִי בַבֹּקֶר וְהִנֵּה־הִוא לֵאָה וַיֹּאמֶר אֶל־לָבָן מַה־ זאת עָשִׂיתָ לִי הֲלֹא בְרָחֵל עָבַדְתִּי עִמָּךְ וְלָמָּה רְמִיתָנִי: 26 וַיֹּאמֶר לָבָן לֹא-יַעֲשֶׂה כֵן בִּמְקוֹמֵנוּ לָתֵת הַצְעִירָה לִפְנֵי הַבְּכִירָה: 27 מַלֵא שְׁבֵעַ זאת וְנִתְּנָה לְךָ גַם־אֶת־זֹאת בַּעֲבדָה אֲשֶׁר תַּעֲבֹד עִמָּדִי עוֹד שֶׁבַע־ שָׁנִים אֲחֵרְוֹת : 28 וַיַּעַשׂ יַעֲקֹב כֵּן וַיְמַלֵא שְׁבָעַ זאת וַיִּתֶּן־לוֹ אֶת־רָחֵל בִּתּוֹ לוֹ לְאִשֶׁה: 20 וַיִּתֵּן לָבָן לְרָחֵל !1 : 24 JT 15 And behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places, whither thou goest, bring thee again into this land: for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of. 16 And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the LORD is in this place; and I knew it not. 17 And he was afraid, and said, How dreadful is this place! this is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven. * 18 And Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put for his pillows, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it. 19 And he called the name of that place Beth-el: but the name of that city was called Luz at the first. 20 And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me, § and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on; 21 So that I come again to my father's house in peace: then shall the LORD be my God. 22 And this stone, which I have set for a pillar, shall be God's house and of all that thou shalt give me, I will surely give the tenth unto thee. : CHAP. XXIX. 1 Jacob coming to the well of Haran, 13 Is entertained by Laban, 18 covenanteth for Rachel, 23 and is deceived with Leah; 28 but marrieth also Rachel. THEN Jacob went ↑ on his journey, and came into the land of the people of the east. 2 And he looked, and behold, a well in the field, and lo, there were three flocks of sheep lying by it; for out of that well they watered the flocks: and a great stone was upon the well's mouth. 3 And thither were all the flocks gathered, and they rolled || the stone from the well's mouth, and watered the sheep, and put the stone again upon the well's mouth in his place. 4 And Jacob said unto them, My brethren, whence be ye? And they said, Of Haran ure we. 5 And he said unto them, Know ye Laban the son of Nahor? And they said, We know him. 6 And he said unto them, Is he well? And they said, He is well: ¶ and behold, Rachel his daughter cometh with the sheep. 7 And he said, Lo, it is ** yet high day, neither is it time that the cattle should be gathered together: water ye the sheep, and go and feed them. 8 And they said, We cannot, until all the flocks be gathered together, §§ and till they roll the stone from the well's mouth; then we water the sheep. 9 And while he yet spake with them, Rachel came with her father's sheep; for she kept them. 10 And it came to pass, when That is, as Aben Ezra observes, a proper and acceptable place, for man to pray in, to the Supreme Being in time of need. He speaks not thus as if he doubted God's promises, or like a mercenary person would make a bargain with God; but on the contrary, is certain of God's perforinance; and therefore, binds himself under an obligation in a grateful return to God for his great mercy; for the Hebrew word, DX denotes surely, as well as if. Heb. Lift up his feet. Ver. 3, 8, and 9. I am of opinion, that removed in this sentence would have been more proper, than the expression rolled, as used by the English translator. It is true, the Hebrew word is to roll, but I must observe here, that, in defective verbs, that lose a letter in their conjugation, Scripture very often runs one verb for another, when both have two permanent letters alike, as, in this verb, 3 are the two permanent letters; and so the verb ' to remove, &c.—as in Psalm cxix. verse 22, is rendered remove; for, how can a rolling-stone be supposed to cover a well? ** Heb. Yet the day is great. Heb. For as by the angels ascending, and descending, is shewn the providence of God, who, though he dwells in heaven, extends his care and government to the earth, by means of the angels, who are bis ministering spirits : so by the Lord's being above it, and saying, “ I am the Lord God of thy father Abraham,” was to inform him, that, both he and his seed should be under his immediate protection; and not under that of the angels, as he says in verse 15, “ And behold, I am with thee, &c. |
