the love of parents and dear friends cannot satisfy you. One, and one alone, can satisfy you that is, God. His forgiving love can take away your guilt. His peace can fill your heart. Thirst then after God, and your soul shall be satisfied. Turn to (Psal. lxiii. 1), "My soul thirsteth for Thee; and compare it with (ver. 5), "My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness." If you have a proud heart, God will not satisfy you. A proud heart is always restless. It is the meek and broken heart, that God loves to satisfy. "The meek shall eat, and be satisfied," (Psal. xxii. 26). Oh, pray then with Philip, "Show us the Father, and it sufficeth us." What a beautiful prayer then this was. Could there be anything wrong in it? Yes, there must have been something wrong, because Jesus said, “Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known Me, Philip?" What was Philip's mistake? The following words show, "He that hath seen Me, hath seen

the Father, and how sayest thou then, show us the Father." Philip, then, was quite right in wishing to see the Father. He was wrong in not knowing, that Jesus manifested the Father; so that, when he saw Jesus, he saw the Father; when he knew Jesus, he knew the Father; when he loved Jesus, he loved the Father. There are many passages of Scripture which prove this; turn to (Col. i. 15), and see what St. Paul calls Christ, "The image of the invisible or unseen God." Compare (Heb. i. 3), "Who, being the brightness of His glory, and the express image of His person." Refer to (2 Cor. iv. 6), "For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face—that is, in the person-of Jesus Christ!" and hence it is, that Jesus is called "the way" to the Father: "I am the way, the truth, and the life, no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me." Hence Jesus is said to de

clare the Father, "He hath declared Him," (John i. 18). To manifest the Father, "I have manifested Thy name unto the men whom Thou gavest me out of the world," (John xvii. 6). To reveal Him: "neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal Him," (Matt. xi. 27.)

Dear reader, do not make the same mistake, that Philip made. He ought to have known, that to know Christ was to know God; and you ought never to forget, that there is only one way to God-by the blood of Jesus; only one way of knowing Godto know Jesus. The Saviour had been teaching Philip a long time, and yet he did not know this. Are not those words very touching? "Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known Me?" But Jesus has been still longer with you, however young you may be. You were given up to Him in your baptism; you have heard of Him from your teachers and ministers. You have read of

Him in Bibles: when you your kneel upon your knees, He is near-when you go to the house of prayer, you are in His presence. He knocks at the door of your young heart. He has watched over you in infancy and childhood, and has, perhaps, raised you from a bed of sickness. My dear child, do you love Jesus, do you know Jesus? He has done all this for you-do you love Him? Oh! what a hard, what a sinful, what an unthankful heart yours must be, if you do not love Him. Jesus must be saying to you now, "Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known Me?"

Do you understand now the prayer, "Lord, show us the Father, and it sufficeth us"? Do you understand how God answers it? He shows us Jesus, and in Jesus we know Him.

MOSES;

Or, the desire to be satisfied with Merry.

WHEN Moses was journeying through the wilderness, he saw some dreadful things. Once, the earth opened, and swallowed up a great many people. Do you remember the names of any of them? Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. Then a dreadful plague broke out, and fourteen thousand and seven hundred died. On another occasion, he saw the fiery serpents bite the murmuring Israelites. But he saw wonderful things too. He saw the waters of the Red Sea part, and open a way for God's people. He saw Amalek overcome, when he lifted up his hands in prayer.

How many sad things must have
