And may this consecrated hour
With better hopes be fill'd.

Thy love the pow'rs of thought bestow'd,
To Thee my thoughts would soar,
Thy mercy o'er my life has flow'd,
That mercy I adore.

In each event of life, how clear
Thy ruling hand I see!

Each blessing to my soul more dear,
Because conferr'd by Thee.

In ev'ry joy that crowns my days,
In every pain I bear,
My heart shall find delight in praise,
Or seek relief in pray'r.

HYMN 136.

While with ceaseless course, the sun
Hasted through the former year,
Many souls their race have run,
Never more to meet us here.

Fix'd in an eternal state,

They have done with all below;

We a little longer wait,

But how little none can know.

Swiftly thus our fleeting days

Bear us down life's rapid stream ! Lord to Heav'n our wishes raise; All on earth is but a dream.

Bless Thy word to young and old ;
Fill us with the Saviour's love;
And, when life's short tale is told,
May we dwell with Thee above.

HYMN 137.

Witness ye men and angels, now
Before the Lord we speak ;
To him we make a solemn vow,-
A vow we dare not break.-

That, long as life itself shall last,
Ourselves to Christ we yield;
Nor from His cause will we depart,
Or ever quit the field.

We trust not in our native strength,
But on His grace rely,

That, with returning wants, the Lord
Will all our need supply.

Lord, guide our doubtful feet aright,
And keep us in Thy ways;

And, while we turn our vows to pray'rs
Turn Thou our pray'rs to praise.

HYMN 138.

Ye servants of God,
Your master proclaim
And publish abroad

His wonderful Name;

The Name all victorious
Of Jesus extol ;

His kingdom is glorious,
And rules over all.

God ruleth on high,
Almighty to save;
And still he is nigh,

His presence we have;
The great congregation
His triumph shall sing,
Ascribing salvation
To Jesus our King.

Then let us adore

And give Him His right! All glory, and pow'r,

All wisdom and might,
All honour and blessing,
With angels above,
And thanks never ceasing,
And infinite love.

APPENDIX

OF

SUNDAY SCHOOL HYMNS.

HYMN 139.

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty; Early in the morning our songs shall rise to Thee;

Holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty! God in Three Persons, blessed Trinity!

Holy, holy, holy! all the saints adore Thee, Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;

Cherubim and Seraphim falling down before Thee,

Which wert, and art, and evermore shall be!

Holy, holy, holy! though the darkness hide Thee,

Though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see,

Only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee

Perfect in power, in love, and purity!

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! All Thy works shall praise Thy name, in earth, and sky, and sea!

Holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty!
God in Three Persons, blessed Trinity!

HYMN 140.

Sun of my Soul, Thou Saviour dear,
It is not night when Thou art near;
Oh, may no earth-born cloud arise
To hide Thee from Thy servant's eyes!
When the soft dews of kindly sleep
My wearied eyelids gently steep,
Be my last thought, how sweet to rest
For ever on my Saviour's breast!

Abide with me from morn till eve,
For without Thee I cannot live!
Abide with me when night is nigh,
For without Thee I dare not die.

Come near and bless us when we wake,
E'er through the world our way we take;
Till in the ocean of Thy love,

We lose ourselves in Heaven above.

HYMN 141.

O God of Bethel! by whose hand
Thy people still are fed;

Who through their weary pilgrimage
Hast all our fathers led;
