He took a child and set him in the midst of them. He took him in his arms:

"Whoever shall receive one such little one in my name," said he, "receiveth me. Whoever shall receive me, receiveth not me, but him that sent me."

"Master," said John, "we saw one casting out devils in thy name. We forbad him, because he followeth not us."

"Forbid him not," said Jesus. "For no man shall do a miracle in my name who can lightly speak evil of me. For he that is not against us is on our part. For whoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name, because ye belong to Christ, truly I tell you: He shall not lose his reward. Whoever shall offend one of these little ones that believe in me, it is better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck and he were cast into the sea.

If thy hand offend thee cut it off.

It is better for thee to enter life maimed, rather than with two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched, where their worm dieth not and the fire is not quenched.

If thy foot offend thee cut it off.

It is better for thee to enter lame into life than with two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched, where their worm dieth not and the fire is not quenched.

If thine eye offend thee pluck it out.

It is better for thee to enter the Kingdom of God with one eye, than with two eyes to be cast into hell fire, where their worm dieth not and the fire is not quenched.

For every one shall be seasoned with fire. Every sacrifice shall be salted with salt. Salt is good. But if the salt has become saltless with what will ye season it?

Have salt in yourselves. Have peace one with another."

He rose up from thence and cometh into the borders of Judea by the farther side Jordan.

The people came to him again. As he was wont he taught them again.

The Pharisees came to him.

"Is it right for a man to put away his wife?" said they, tempting him.

"What did Moses command you?" said he.

"Moses allowed one to write a bill of divorce and to put her away."

"For the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept. But from the beginning of Creation, God made them male and female. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife. The two shall become one flesh. So then

they are no more two but one flesh. So what God hath joined together let no man put asunder." .

In the house his disciples asked him again of the

same.

"Whoever shall put away his wife and marry another," said he, "committeth adultery against her. If a woman shall put away her husband and be married to another, she committeth adultery."

"Suffer the little children to come to me," said he, "and forbid them not. For of such is the Kingdom of God. Truly I tell you: Whoever shall not receive the Kingdom of God as a little child shall never enter it."

He took them up in his arms, put his hands on them and blessed them.

When he had gone out into the road there came one running who kneeled to him:

"Good Master," said he, "what shall I do to inherit eternal life?"

"Why callest thou me good? None is good but God alone. Thou knowest the commandments: Commit no adultery. Kill not. Steal not. Bear

and mother."

"Master, all these have I observed from my youth."

Jesus beholding him loved him: "One thing thou lackest," said he. Sell whatever thou hast and give to thou shalt have treasure in heaven. the cross and follow me."

He was sad at that saying and went away grieved. For he had great possessions.

"How hardly shall they that have riches enter the Kingdom of God!" said Jesus to his disciples as he looked round.

The disciples were astonished at his words.

"Children," saith Jesus again to them, "how hard it is for them that trust in riches to enter the Kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of God."

They were astonished out of measure:

"Who then can be saved?" said they among themselves.

Jesus looked at them:

"With men it is impossible," said he, "but not with God. For with God all things are possible." "Lo, we have left all and followed thee," Peter began to say.

"Truly I tell you," answered Jesus, "No man

hath left house or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for my sake and the Good News, but he shall receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life.

But many that are first shall be last, and the last first."

They were on the road going up to Jerusalem. Jesus went before them. They were amazed. As they followed, they were afraid.

He took again the twelve and began to tell them what was going to happen him :

"Behold, we go up to Jerusalem," said he. "The Son of man shall be delivered to the Chief Priests and Scribes. They shall condemn him to death. They shall deliver him to the heathen. They shall mock him, spit on him, beat him, and kill him. After three days, he shall rise again."

James and John the sons of Zebedee came to him: "Master," said they, "we would thou shouldest do for us whatever we shall desire."

"What would ye I should do for you?"

"Grant us that we may sit, one on thy right hand, the other on thy left, in thy glory."
