He preached in their synagogues throughout all Galilee and cast out devils.

A leper came to him. He besought him. He

knelt to him:

"If thou wilt," said he, "thou canst cure me.'

Jesus had pity on him. He put out his hand and touched him:

"I will," said he. "Be cured."

As soon as Jesus had spoken the leprosy left him and he was cured.

Jesus strictly charged him and at once sent him

away:

"See thou say nothing to any one," saith he, "but go thy way. Show thyself to the priest and offer for thy cure what Moses commanded, for a witness to them."

He went out and began to talk much and blaze abroad the matter, so Jesus could no more enter the city, but was out in desert places.

They came to him from all sides.

After some days Jesus again went into Capernaum. It was rumored he was in the house.

At once many were gathered together so there was no room to receive them even about the door. He preached the word to them.

They come to him bringing one sick of the palsy borne of four. They could not come near him for the press so they uncovered the roof where he was. When they had broken it up they let down the bed on which the sick of the palsy lay:

"Son," said Jesus to the sick man when he saw their faith, "thy sins are forgiven thee."

Some scribes were sitting there reasoning in their hearts:

"Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”

"Why reason ye these things in your hearts?" said Jesus at once to them when he saw in his spirit they so reasoned in themselves. "Which is easier to say to the sick man: Thy sins are forgiven; or to say Rise. Take up thy bed and walk. But that ye may know the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick man,)

"I say to thee: Rise. Take up thy bed, and go thy way into thine house."

He at once arose, took up the bed and went out before them all. They were all amazed and glorified God:

"We never saw it on this wise," said they.

Jesus again went out by the sea side. All the multitude resorted to him and he taught them.

As he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alpheus sitting at the receipt of custom :

"Follow me," said Jesus.

He rose up and followed him.

As Jesus sat taking a meal in his house many publicans and sinners sat also together with him. and his disciples. For there were many, and they followed him.

The scribes and Pharisees saw him eat with publicans and sinners:

"How is it he eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners?" said they to his disciples.

"They that are well need no physician, but they that are sick," saith Jesus when he heard this. "I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance."

The disciples of John and of the Pharisees used to fast.

"Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast," they come and say to Jesus, "but thy disciples fast not?"

"Can the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them?" said Jesus. "As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days. No man also

seweth a piece of new cloth on an old garment; else the new piece that filled it up taketh away from the old, and the rent is made worse. No man putteth new wine into old bottles; else the new wine doth burst the bottles, the wine will be spilled, and the bottles lost. New wine must be put into new bottles."

He went through the wheat fields on the Sabbath. As they went along the disciples began to pluck the heads of wheat.

"Behold," said the Pharisees, "Why do they on the Sabbath what is not right?"

"Have ye never read what David did," said he, "when he had need, and was hungry, he and they that were with him, how he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and did eat the shew bread, which is not right to eat but for the priests, and gave also to them that were with him?"

The Sabbath was made for man and not man for the Sabbath. Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the Sabbath."

He again entered the synagogue.

A man with a withered hand was there. They watched him to see whether he would cure him on the Sabbath, that they might accuse him.

"Stand forth," saith he to the man with the

withered hand.

"Is it right to do good on the Sabbath, or to do evil?" saith he. "To save life or to kill?"

They held their peace.

He looked round on them with anger. grieved for the hardness of their hearts:

He was

"Stretch out thine hand," saith he to the man. He stretched it out and it was made sound as the other.

The Pharisees went out and at once took counsel with the Herodians against him to destroy him.

Jesus with his disciples withdrew to the sea. A great multitude from Galilee followed him, from Judea, also, from Jerusalem, from Idumaea, from beyond Jordan. They about Tyre and Sidon, a great multitude, when they had heard what great things he did, came to him.

He spoke to his disciples to have a little boat wait on him because of the multitude, lest they should throng him. For he had cured so many that as many as were sick pressed on him to touch him. When unclean spirits saw him they fell down before him :

"Thou art the Son of God!" cried they.

He strictly charged them not to make him known.
