PREFACE. THE Lectures on which the present volume is based were delivered in 1899-1900, and their publication is long overdue. The delay has been caused by impaired health, which compelled me for many years to confine myself to the work of my Chair. I have to thank the Croall Trustees for their courtesy and forbearance. Since the delivery of the Lectures there has appeared the edition of the works of Clement by O. Stählin, the three volumes of which were published respectively in 1905, 1906, 1909. In preparing the Lectures for publication I have used his text throughout. It is impossible. to exaggerate the services of Stählin in the elucidation of the text and sources of Clement. I have also consulted the relative literature that has appeared since the Lectures were written, as well as other earlier writings on the subject, to which I had not access at the time. This has led to the reconsideration of some questions touched upon in the Lectures and to the consideration of others not then discussed. For these reasons the work |
