THE SOCIAL REUNION.

906 Co.6 C5612 1870-1876

THE Seventeenth Social Reunion was held at the Academy of Music, Brooklyn, N. Y., on Thursday evening, May 12, 1870.

The parlors and lobbies of the Academy were thrown open at half past six o'clock, and Dodworth's Band was in attendance, as usual, furnishing delightful music. Those who were to speak, with many ladies and gentlemen and several strangers from abroad, availed themselves of the opportunity for social greetings till the hour of public service arrived.

At seven and a half o'clock the chair was taken by the Rev. Henry Ward Beecher, who requested the whole assembly to unite in singing the favorite old hymn, "All hail the power of Jesus' name!" which they did most heartily. The Rev. William H. Ward then led the audience in prayer; after which the solo from the Oratorio of Elijah, "If with all your hearts ye seek me," was excellently sung by Mr. W. J. Hill.

Brief statements in relation to the objects of the Union and the work of the year were then made by Dr. Ray Palmer, and the solo, "But the Lord is mindful of his own," was sung with fine effect by Miss Sterling.

Addresses were then made by the chairman, Mr. Beecher; Rev. Drs. Theodore L. Cuyler of the Presbyterian Church, C. B. Crane of the Baptist Church, John Cotton Smith of the Episcopal Church; and President Merriman of Ripon College.

At intervals, choice pieces of music were sung, Mrs. Christopher, of the Broadway Tabernacle, playing the accompaniments.

The addresses were rich in the best qualities of popular eloquence; strength and beauty, wit and pathos, the thoughtful and the playful, have seldom been better combined. Altogether the meeting was a happy expression of Christian catholicity and brotherhood, and an illustration of the healthful cheerfulness which earnest Christian men should habitually cultivate.

ANNIVERSARY AT BOSTON.

THE customary Anniversary of the American Congregational Union at Boston was not held in May, 1870, on account of the absence of the New England Secretary at the West, and because the hope had been cherished that a more general meeting would be held Anniversary Week, to awaken a special interest in this memorial year.
