Tout souffrant d'une attaque de goutte qui, pour les esprits ordinaires, équivaut à une privation totale de tout passe-temps favori, un amateur zélé de la pêche, disciple plein d'ardeur d'Isaac Walton, a cru trouver dans sa fertile imagination une ressource qui doit l'aider à détourner les malicieuses attaques du mal qui le tourmente. Une cuve de brasseur remplie d'eau, et comme on s'en doute bien fournie d'un bon nombre d'habitans de l'élément liquide, lui fait encore trouver même auprès de son feu, et en dépit de sa goutte, quelque jouissance dans son plaisir accoutumė; il veille sur le liège de sa ligne, plein de confiance dans le succès de ses efforts. Ce tableau fut exposé à Somerset House en 1828; l'originalité de sa conception aussi - bien que la bonté de l'exécution promettaient de la part de son auteur d'autres chefs-d'œuvre ; mais l'exposition était encore ouverte qu'un accident déplorable mit fin à la carrière de l'artiste : il était à considérer un nouveau bâtiment non terminé, lorsqu'il se laissa tomber d'une grande hauteur et fut tué du coup, il n'avait que 23 ans, et laissa une jeune femme avec deux enfans pour pleurer sa mort. Ce tableau a été gravé par la suite avec beaucoup de sentiment par Robert Graves; cette gravure a été publiée à Londres par MM. Moon, Boys et compagnie, pour être vendue au profit de la veuve et des orphelins de Lane. Puisse cette vente réaliser la louable attente de ces éditeurs bienveillans! LANE. THE ENTHUSIAST. Wɛ have here an amusing exemplification of the power which a habit of riding a hobby-horse, as Sterne calls it, accquires over the individual who resigns himself to that pleasing delusion. A true brother of the angle is suffering from a visitation of gout, and, to ordinary minds, this would amount to an absolute prohibition of any favourite pastime; but this enthusiastic disciple of Isaak Walton has sought, and found in his fertile imagination, a resource that enables him to disappoint the malicious intentions of the unwelcome intruder. A brewing vat, filled with water, and, we may be sure, furnished with an adequate number of the finny tribe, enables him in spite of the gout to enjoy his accustomed recreation even at his fire side,and he watches the cork float with a full reliance on the certainty of sport. This cabinet picture appeared at Somerset House in 1828, and the legitimate humour in its conception together with the manual power evinced in its execution warranted high expectations of future excellence the exhibition was yet open when a melancholy event put an end to the career of the artist, who in examining a new and unfinished building fell from a great height and was killed on the spot, aged 23 years leaving a young wife and two infants to deplore his loss. The picture has been subsequently engraved with much feeling by Robert Graves, and the print is published by Moon, Boys and Co. of London with the intention of applying the profits to the benefit of the widow and fatherless children may its såle realize the most sanguine expectations of the benevolent projectors. |
