LES MUSES.

Ce bas-relief orne le piédestal de la statue d'Addison, dans l'abbaye de Westminster à Londres. Les filles d'Apollon, chacune distinguée par l'attribut qui lui est propre, sont rangées de chaque côté de l'inscription. Melpomene, muse de la tragédie, et qui inspira Caton à l'auteur, un masque à ses pieds, est à gauche; Clio s'agenouille à droite devant le nom d'Addison; près de celle-ci est Euterpe, tenant une flûte de chaque main; puis Erato touchant de la lyre, et Thalie portant dans sa main droite un masque. Derrière Melpomene on voit Calliope dans l'attitude de la réflexion; Terpsichore dansant, Polymnie, et Uranie une sphère à ses pieds.

Le talent et le bon goût règnent dans cette composition exécutée avec soin et légèreté.

THE MUSES.

THIS basso-relievo ornaments the pedestal of the statue of Addison, in Westminster Abbey. The daughters of Apollo, each distinguished by her proper attribute, are ranged ou either side of the recording inscription: Melpomene, the tragic Muse and the inspirant of Cato, with a mask at her feet being nearest thereto on the left, while Clio with peculiar fitness kneels on the right to the name of Addison. Next to Clio appears Euterpe with the flutes, Erato playing on the lyre, and Thalia who holds a mask in her right hand. Beyond Melpomene is seen Calliope in an attitude of meditation, Terpsichore tripping « on the light fantastic toe, » Polymnia, and Urania with a sphere.

This work displays much taste and gracefulness of design, and is executed with care and delicacy.
