REPORT TO THE GOVERNOR.

TO HIS EXCELLENCY, JOHN H. GEAR, Governor of Iowa:

I have the honor to present you herewith the annual report of the Iowa State Horticultural Society for the year 1877:

The many able reports from the several fruit districts of the state, supplemented by discussions at our annual meeting, exhibit the fact, that while our fruit crop of 1877 was far inferior to that of 1876, yet never before in the history of our society have our people in all parts of the state been so confident of ultimate and entire success in triumphing over our climatic difficulties. By seedling production from fruits matured in our climate, and by importation from Russia, Canada, etc., we are rapidly adding to our lists of fruits that will endure any phase of our climate. The forestry pamphlets and reports of our society are eagerly sought for by our settlers on the broad prairies, and are the guides used in the successful planting of thousands of acres annually of shelter belts and forestry plantations.

Local horticultural societies are springing up in every part of the state as aids in the great work of making our homes homelike. Hoping in the near future for even more extended usefulness of our organization, I am

Yours obediently.

J. L. BUDD, Secretary.
