bearing that name at the southern extremity of the city. Cottages were built, and a colony of potters, with their encumbrances, travelled hither by canal barges from Staffordshire. For over forty years it met with considerable success, but eventually collapsed in 1841.

Lest the writer be deemed unduly pessiGrowing mistic, it should here be observed that to-day Local Patriotism. there is, for perhaps the first time, a latent but unmistakable growth of interest in literature of local production. Maybe this is a happy portent of coming intellectual health. In recent years a few earnest collectors have sprung to the fore, saving from the "shipwreck of time" many opuscula and literary fragments which must prove of great service when the history of the Mersey Federated Boroughs comes to be written.

Macaulay once confessed that his History of England could hardly have been completed but for the aid he received from the perusal of thousands of pamphlets.

Knowledge of this local movement encourages me to place on record a catalogue of Mersey literature. By no means is it a complete bibliography, but merely indicative of what can be done when one collects seriously.

If it proves useful, I am amply repaid for any trouble it may have involved.
