2 And Jephthah faid unto them, I and my people were at great ftrife with the children of Ammon; and when I called you, ye delivered me not out of their hands.

3 And when I faw that ye delivered me not, I put my life in my hands, and paffed over against the children of Ammon, and the LORD delivered them into my hand: wherefore then are ye come up unto me this day, to fight against me?

4 Then Jephthah gathered together all the men of Gilead, and fought with Ephraim: and the men of Gilead fimote Ephraim, because they said, Ye Gileadites are fugitives of Ephraim, among the Ephraimites, and among the Manaffites.

5 Ånd the Gileadites took the paffages of Jordan before the Ephraimites: and it was Jo,that when thofe Ephraimites which were efcaped, faid, Let me go over; that the men of Gilead faid unto him, Art thou an Ephraimite? If he said, Nay:

6 Then faid they unto him,Say now Shibboleth and he faid Sibboleth: for he could not frame to pronounce it right. Then they took him, and flew him at the paffages of Jordan and there fell at that time of the Ephraimites, fourty and two thoufand.

7 And Jephthah judged Ifrael fix yeares: then died Jephthah the Gileadite, and was buried in one of the cities of Gilead.

8 And after him Ibzan of Beth-lehem judged Ifrael.

9And he had thirty fons,and thirty daughters, whom he fent abroad, and took in thirty daughters from abroad for his fons. And he judged Ifrael feven yeares.

10 Then died Ibzan, and was buried at Beth-lehem.

II And after him, Elon a Zebulonite judged Ifrael,& he judged Ifrael ten yeares. 12 And Elon the Zebulonite died, and was buried in Ajjalon in the countrey of Zebulun.

13 ¶ And after him, Abdon the fon of Hillel a Pirathonite judged Ifrael.

9 And God hearkened to the voice of Manoah; and the angel of God came again unto the woman as the fat in the field: but Manoah her husband was not with her.

II And Manoah arose, and went after his wife, and came to the man,and faid unto him, Art thou the man that spakeft unto the woman? And he said, I am.

12 And Manoah faid,Now let thy words come to paffe: † How fhall we order the child, and how fhall we do unto him?

13 And the angel of the LORD faid unto Manoah, Of all that I faid unto the woman, let her beware.

14 She may not cat of any thing that coshall he meth of the vine, neither let her drink wine or ftrong drink, nor eat any unclean thing: all that I commanded her,let her obferve.

16 And the angel of the LORD faid unto Manoah,Though thou detain me,I will not eat of thy bread: and if thou wilt offer a burnt-offering, thou must offer it unto the LORD: for Manoah knew not that he was an angel of the LORD.

17 And Manoah faid unto the angel of the LORD, What is thy name, that when thy fayings come to paffe, we may do thee honour?

18 And the angel of the LORD faid unto him, Why askeft thou thus after my name, feeing it is fecret ?

19S0 Manoah took a kid,with a meat-offering, and offered it upon a rock unto the LORD and the angel did wonderously, and Manoah and his wife looked on.

20 For it came to paffe, when the flame went up toward heaven from off the altar, that the angel of the LORD afcended in the flame of the altar: and Manoah and his wife looked on it, and fell on their faces to the ground.

21 (But the angel of the LORD did no more appear to Manoah and to his wife) then Manoah knew that he was an angel of the LORD.


22 And Manoah faid unto his wife, We fhallfurely die, because we have seen God.

Chap.6. 23 But his wife faid unto him, If the LORD were pleafed to kill us, he would not have received a burnt-offering and a meat-offering at our hands, neither would he have fhewed us all these things, nor would as at this time have told us Juch things as thefe.

Samfon born. He kills a lion, and marryes. 24 And the woman bare a fon,and called his name Samfon: and the childe grew, and the LORD bleffed him.

25 And the fpirit of the LORD began to move him at times in the camp of Dan, between Zorah and Eshtaol.

ANd Samfon went down to Timnath,

and faw a woman in Timnath, of the daughters of the Philiftines.

2 And he came up and told his father,and his mother, and faid, I have feen a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philiftines now therefore get her for me to wife.


3 Then his father and his mother faid unto him, Is there never a woman among the daughters of thy brethren, or among all people, that thou goeft to take a wife of the uncircumcifed Philiftines? And Samfon faid unto his father,Get her for me, for the plea- † Heb. feth me well.

4 But his father and his mother knew not that it was of the LORD, that he fought an occafion against the Philiftines: for at that time the Philiftines had dominion over If

19 And the fpirit of the LORD came upon him, and he went down to Afhkelon, and flew thirty men of them,and took their Lor, poil, and gave change of garments unto apparel. them which expounded the riddle: and his anger was kindled,and he went up to his fathers houfe.

20But Samfon's wife was given to his companion, whom he had ufed as his friend.

in the time of wheat-harveft, that Samfon vifited his wife with a kid, and he faid, I will go in to my wife into the chamber. 9 Then the Philiftines went up, and pitched in Judah, and fpread themfelves in Lehi.

10 And the men of Judah faid, Why are ye come up against us? And they answered, To bind Samfon are we come up, to do to him, as he hath done to us.


II Then three thousand men of Judah † went to the top of the rock Etam, and † Heb. faid to Samfon, Knowelt thou not that the went Philiftines are rulers over us? what is this that thou haft done unto us? And he faid unto them, As they did unto me, fo have I: done unto them.

12 And they faid unto him, We are come down to bind thee, that we may deliver thee into the hand of the Philiftines. And Samfon faid unto them, Swear unto me, that ye will not fall upon me your felves..

13 And they fpake unto him, faying, No: but we will bind thee faft, and deliver thee into their hand but furely we will not kill thee. And they bound him with two

Hen went Samfon to Gaza, and faw therean harlot, and went in unto her. 2 And it was told the Gazites, faying, an harlos Samfon is come hither. 17 That he told her all his heart, and faid unto her, There hath not come a rafour upon mine head; for I have been a Nazarite unto God from my mothers wombe: if I be fhaven, then my strength will go from me, and I fhall become weak, and be like any other man.

18And when Delilah faw that he had told her all his heart, fhe fent and called for the lords of the Philistines,faying, Come up this once, for he hath fhewed me all his heart. Then the lords of the Philiftines came up unto her, & brought money in their hand. 19 And he made him fleep upon her knees, and fhe called for a man, and fhe caufed him to fhave off the feven locks of his head, and fhe began to afflict him, and his ftrength went from him.

20 And fhe faid, The Philistines be upon thee, Samfon.And he awoke out of his fleep, and faid, I will go out as at other times before, and shake my felt. And he wilt not that the LORD was departed from him.

21. But the Philistines took him, and
