8 eous he that doeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. To this end was the Son of God manifested, that he might destroy the works 9 of the devil. Whosoever is begotten of God doeth no sin, because his seed abideth in him: and he can10 not sin, because he is begotten of God. In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of 11 God, neither he that loveth not his brother. For this

is the message which ye heard from the beginning, 12 that we should love one another: not as Cain was of the evil one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his works were evil, and his brother's righteous.

13 Marvel not, brethren, if the world hateth you. 14 We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not 15 abideth in death. Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer and ye know that no murderer hath eternal 16 life abiding in him. Hereby know we love, because

And this is his commandment, that we should believe in the name of his 2 Gr. beliere Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, even as he 24 gave us commandment. And he that keepeth his commandments abideth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he gave us.

Hereby know 2 ye the Spirit of God: every spirit which confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: and 3 every spirit which 'confesseth not Jesus is not of God: authorities and this is the spirit of the antichrist, whereof ye read annul have heard that it cometh; and now it is in the world already. Ye are of God, my little children, and have 4 overcome them: because greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world. They are of the world: 5 therefore speak they as of the world, and the world heareth them. We are of God: he that knoweth God 6 heareth us; he who is not of God heareth us not. Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; 7 and every one that loveth is begotten of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; 8 for God is love. Herein was the love of God mani- 9 2 Or, in our fested in us, that God hath sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he 10 loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought 11 to love one another. No man hath beheld God at any 12 time if we love one another, God abideth in us, and his love is perfected in us: hereby know we that we 13 abide in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit. And we have beheld and bear witness 14 that the Father hath sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world. Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the 15 Son of God, God abideth in him, and he in God. And 16 we know and have believed the love which God hath 2 in us. God is love; and he that abideth in love abideth in God, and God abideth in him. Herein is 17 love made perfect with us, that we may have boldness in the day of judgement; because as he is, even so are we in this world. There is no fear in love: 18 but perfect love casteth out fear, because fear hath punishment; and he that feareth is not made perfect in love. We love, because he first loved us. 19

Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is God whom begotten of God: and whosoever loveth him that begat 2 loveth him also that is begotten of him. Hereby we know that we love the children of God, when we love 3 God, and do his commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his 4 commandments are not grievous. For whatsoever is begotten of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that hath overcome the world, even our 5 faith. For there are three who bear witness, the Spirit, and the water, 9 and the blood: and the three agree in one. receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater for the witness of God is this, that he hath 10 borne witness concerning his Son. He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in him: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he hath not believed in the witness that God hath borne 11 concerning his Son. And the witness is this, that God gave unto us eternal life, and this life is in his 12 Son. He that hath the Son hath the life; he that hath not the Son of God hath not the life.

These things have I written unto you, that ye may know that ye have eternal life, even unto you that be14 lieve on the name of the Son of God. THE SECOND EPISTLE OF

JOHN.

1

THE elder unto the elect lady and her children, whom I love in truth; and not I only, but also all 2 they that know the truth; for the truth's sake which 3 abideth in us, and it shall be with us for ever: Grace, mercy, peace shall be with us, from God the Father, and from Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.

4

I rejoice greatly that I have found certain of thy children walking in truth, even as we received com5 mandment from the Father. And now I beseech thee, lady, not as though I wrote to thee a new commandment, but that which we had from the beginning, that 6 we love one another. And this is love, that we should walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, even as ye heard from the beginning, that ye 7 should walk in it. For many deceivers are gone forth into the world, even they that confess not that Jesus Christ cometh in the flesh. This is the deceiver and 8 the antichrist. Look to yourselves, that ye 1lose not1 Or, dethe things which 2 we have wrought, but that ye receive 9 a full reward. Whosoever goeth onward and abideth ancient not in the teaching of Christ, hath not God: he that abideth in the teaching, the same hath both the Father Or, taketh 10 and the Son. If any one cometh unto you, and bring the lead. eth not this teaching, receive him not into your house, 11 and give him no greeting: for he that giveth him greeting partaketh in his evil works.

12

Having many things to write unto you, I would not write them with paper and ink: but I hope to come unto you, and to speak face to face, that your joy may 13 be fulfilled. The children of thine elect sister salute
