1 Or, women.

self to pleasure is dead while she liveth. These things 7
also command, that they may be without reproach.
But if any provideth not for his own, and specially his 8
own household, he hath denied the faith, and is worse
than an unbeliever. Let none be enrolled as a widow 9
under threescore years old, having been the wife of one
man, well reported of for good works; if she hath 10
brought up children, if she hath used hospitality to
strangers, if she hath washed the saints' feet, if she
hath relieved the afflicted, if she hath diligently fol-
lowed every good work. But younger widows refuse: 11
for when they have waxed wanton against Christ, they
desire to marry; having condemnation, because they 12
have rejected their first faith. And withal they learn 13
also to be idle, going about from house to house; and
not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speak-
ing things which they ought not. I desire therefore 14
that the younger widows marry, bear children, rule
the household, give none occasion to the adversary
for reviling for already some are turned aside after 15
Satan. If any woman that believeth hath widows, 16
let her relieve them, and let not the church be bur-
dened; that it may relieve them that are widows
indeed.

Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of 17 double honour, especially those who labour in the word and in teaching. For the scripture saith, Thou shalt 18 not muzzle the ox when he treadeth out the corn. And, The labourer is worthy of his hire. Against an 19 elder receive not an accusation, except at the mouth of two or three witnesses. Them that sin reprove in the 20 sight of all, that the rest also may be in fear. I charge 21 thee in the sight of God, and Christ Jesus, and the elect angels, that thou observe these things without 2 prejudice, doing nothing by partiality. Lay hands 22 hastily on no man, neither be partaker of other men's sins: keep thyself pure. Be no longer a drinker of 23 water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities. which thou hast heard from me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. That good thing which 14 was committed unto thee guard through the 2 Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us.

This thou knowest, that all that are in Asia turned 15 away from me; of whom are Phygelus and Hermogenes. The Lord grant mercy unto the house of Onesiph- 16 orus: for he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain; but, when he was in Rome, he sought me 17 diligently, and found me (the Lord grant unto him to 18 find mercy of the Lord in that day); and in how many things he ministered at Ephesus, thou knowest very well.

Thou therefore, my child, be strengthened in the 2 grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things which 2 thou hast heard from me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. 3 Suffer hardship with me, as a 3 good soldier of Christ Jesus. No soldier on service 4 entangleth himself in the affairs of this life; that he may please him who enrolled him as a soldier. And 5 if also a man contend in the games, he is not crowned, except he have contended lawfully. The husbandman 6 that laboureth must be the first to partake of the fruits. Consider what I say; for the Lord shall give thee 7 understanding in all things. Remember Jesus Christ, 8 risen from the dead, of the seed of David, according to my gospel: wherein I suffer hardship unto bonds, 9 as a malefactor; but the word of God is not bound. Therefore I endure all things for the elect's sake, 10 that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. Faithful is the *say- 11 ing For if we died with him, we shall also live with 12 him: if we endure, we shall also reign with him: if we shall deny him, he also will deny us if we are 13 faithless, he abideth faithful; for he cannot deny himself.

Of these things put them in remembrance, charging 14 them in the sight of the Lord, that they strive not about words, to no profit, to the subverting of them that hear.
