Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: 18 ation as in When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, 3 Some an- before they came together she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. Now when they were departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I tell thee: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him. 14 And he arose and took the young child and his mother 15 by night, and departed into Egypt; and was there until

the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, 16 Out of Egypt did I call my son. Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the 2 wise men, was ex-2 Gr. Magi. ceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the male children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the borders thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had carefully learned of the wise men. 17 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremiah 3 Or, the prophet, saying,

And she would not be comforted, because they are

But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the 20 Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying, Arise and take the young child and his mother, and

reigning over Judæa in the room of his father Herod,
he was afraid to go thither; and being warned of God

came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might
be fulfilled which was spoken 1by the prophets, that he
should be called a Nazarene.

And in those days cometh John the Baptist, preach- 3 ing in the wilderness of Judæa, saying, Repent ye; for 2 the kingdom of heaven is at hand. For this is he 3

that was spoken of 1 by Isaiah the prophet, saying,

The voice of one crying in the wilderness,

Make ye ready the way of the Lord,

Make his paths straight.

Now John himself had his raiment of camel's hair, 4 and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his food was locusts and wild honey. Then went out unto him 5 Jerusalem, and all Judæa, and all the region round about Jordan; and they were baptized of him in the 6 river Jordan, confessing their sins. and he will throughly cleanse his threshing-floor; and
he will gather his wheat into the garner, but the chaff
he will burn up with unquenchable fire.
