SUGGESTED READINGS FOR COMMITTEE REPORTS

1. Chapters II and III of Ely and Wicker's Elementary Principles of Economics tell of the various stages of economic development.

2. Chapter XXIII of Fairchild's Elements of Social Science—The State, the Law, and Crime-discusses the political organization of our government today; compares the agencies of control in modern society with those of the early stages of man's development.

3. Chapter I of Leavitt and Brown's Elementary Social Science gives a clear description of individual wants; of community wants; of institutions; of the satisfaction of economic wants; of what is meant by the terms land, labor, capital, and property. This chapter will help to make clear society's interdependence and coöperation.

4. Have a report on the imports of the United States. Reference: World Almanac and Book of Facts. With this report as a basis, get the class to discuss our dependence upon foreign countries for food, clothing, and shelter. In the light of this dependence, what meaning may fairly be given to the phrase "one hundred per cent Americanism"?

Keen competition in modern industry makes good health as necessary as skill.

A Fair Chance to Health. Modern industrial life demands much from the men and women who work together to supply our needs. Training is needed first of all. Employees must not only know how to run the machinery in a factory, but they must have the strength to do their work. A great deal of the life of the American pioneer was spent out of doors. These pioneers walked long distances to their daily work.
