22:34: silenced the Sadducees, they gathered themselves together. And one of them, a lawyer, tempted him and asked: "Master, which is the great commandment in the law?" He said to them: "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God, With all thy heart, And with all thy mind. This is the great and first commandment. Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hangs the whole of the law." While the Pharisees were gathered together Jesus asked them: "What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?" "David's." "How, then, does David in spirit call him Lord, and say : The Lord said to my Lord: Sit thou on my right hand, Till I put thine enemies under thy feet? and if then David calls him Lord, how is he his son?" No one could answer him a word, and from 22:46. that day on no one dared to question him any longer. Then Jesus talked to the crowds and to the disciples and said: "The Scribes and the Pharisees Sit in Moses' seat. So all they tell you, But do not do as they do, They bind heavy burdens, And put them on men's shoulders. But they themselves do not wish to move them With their finger. But all their deeds they do To be looked at by men. For they make broad their phylacteries, And the salutations in the market-places, But do not you be called, Rabbi. For you have but one teacher, and all you are brothers. And do not call any one father on earth, 23:9. For you have but one Father in heaven For you have but one Master, the Christ. But he who is greatest among you Will be your servant. Whoever shall exalt himself Will be humbled. Whoever shall humble himself Will be exalted. Woe to you Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut up the Kingdom of Heaven You neither go in yourself, Nor do you allow those entering to go in. Woe to you Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you compass sea and land To make one proselyte, And when he is made, You make him twofold more the child of gehenna than yourselves. Woe to you, you blind guides! who say: Whoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing, 23: 16. But whoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor. You blind fools! Which is greater, the gold? Or the temple which makes the gold sacred? Whoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing, But whoever shall swear by the gift on it, he is a debtor. You blind fools! For which is greater, the gift, Or the altar which makes the gift sacred? So whoever shall swear by the altar, Swears by it and by him who dwells in it. Swears by the throne of God and by him who sits on it. Woe to you Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and anise and cummin, And have omitted the weightier parts of the law, justice, pity and faith. But these you ought to have done, And not to have left the others undone. 23:24. You blind guides! You strain out a gnat And swallow a camel! Woe to you Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you But inside they are full from extortion and ex cess. You blind Pharisee ! Clean first the inside of the cup and of the dish, That the outside may be clean also. Woe to you Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whited sepulchres which outside appear beautiful, But inside are full of dead men's bones and of all uncleanness In the same way also, you outside appear to men good But inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness. Woe to you Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! |
