But I tell you :
Neither by heaven,
For you cannot make one hair white or black. Let your communication be: Yes. Yes. No.
A tooth for a tooth.
Do not resist him who is doing you harm.
5 ; 42.
Who asks of you.
Who wishes to borrow from you.
Thou shalt love thy neighbor,
And hate thine enemy. But I tell
you: Love your enemies. Bless those who curse you. Do good to those who hate you. Pray for those who despitefully use you and
persecute you, That you may be the children Of your
Father in Heaven. For he makes his sun to rise on the evil And on the good. He sends rain on the just, And on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, What reward have you? Do not even the tax-collectors do the same? If you salute your brothers only, What do
do more than others ? Do not even the heathen do the same? So you be perfect, Just as your Father in Heaven is perfect. Be careful not to do your religious duties before
To be looked at by them.
Otherwise you have no reward,
Father in Heaven.
So when you do charitable things
To tell you the truth,
But when you are doing charitable things,
And your Father, who sees in secret,
Will reward you. And when you pray, you are not to be like the
hypocrites, For they like to pray standing in the syna
gogues And at the corners of the streets That they may be seen by men.
To tell you the truth, They have received their reward. When you pray, do not use vain repetitions like
the heathen do.
For they think they shall be heard
For their much speaking.
For your Father knows what you need,
So pray in this way :
Hallowed be thy name,
And forgive us our trespasses
And lead us not into temptation,
For if you forgive men their failings
Your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their failings
Neither will your Father forgive your failings.
When you are fasting do not be
Like long-faced hypocrites. For they have long faces,
That they may appear to men to be fasting.
To tell you the truth :
They have their reward.
But when you are fasting,
face : That you do not appear to men to be fasting,
But to your Father who is in secret, And your Father who sees in secret,
Will reward you.
Do not be laying up for yourselves treasures on
And where thieves break through and steal. But be laying up for yourselves treasures in
heaven, Where neither moth nor rust consume And where thieves do not break through nor
steal. For where your treasure is,
There will your heart be also.
So if your eye is perfect
Your whole body will be full of darkness.
How great is that darkness !
