41 me.

that receives me receives him that sent He that receives a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet's reward; and he that receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man, shall receive a righteous man's re42 ward. And whoever shall give to drink to one of these little ones a cup of cold water only, in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward.

XI. And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished commanding his twelve disciples,

he departed thence to teach and preach 2 in their cities. But John having heard in the prison the works of* the Christ, 3 sent two of his disciples, and said to him : Art thou the coming [one] ? or are we tot 4 wait for another? And Jesus answer

blessed is [he] whosoever shall not be 7 offended in me. But as these went [away], Jesus began to say to the crowds concerning John: What went ye out into the wilderness to see? a reed moved 8 about by the wind? But what went ye out to see? a man clothed in delicate raiment. Lo those who wear delicate things are in the houses of kings. But what went ye out to see? a prophet? Yea, I say to you, and more than a pro10 phet: for this is he of whom it is written, Behold I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before i thee. Verily I say to you, that there has not arisen among the born of women a greater than John the Baptist. But the little one* in the kingdom of the 12 heavens is greater than he. But from the days of John the Baptist until now,

the kingdom of the heavens is taken by violence, and the violent seize on it. 13 For all the prophets and the law have 14 prophesied unto John. And if ye will receive it, this is Elias who is* to come. 15 He that has ears to hear, let him hear. 16 But to whom shall I liken this generation? It is like children† sitting in the markets, and calling to their companions, 17 and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have sung dirges to you, and ye have not wailed. 18 For John has come neither eating nor drinking, and they say he has a devil. 19 The Son of man has come eating and drinking, and they say, Lo, a man [that is] eating and wine-drinking, a friend of tax-gatherers and sinners :- and wisdom has been justified by her children.

* ¿ μeλλwv. By saying, 'who is to come,' it is left in the abstract pretty much as in Greekthe one who had this character in a Jew's mind according to prophecy. If we say, 'who is about to come,' the mind turns to a time yet future who was' is interpretation.

Then began he to reproach the cities in which most of his works of power had taken place,* because they had not re21 pented. Woe to thee, Chorazin! woe to thee, Bethsaida. For if the works of power which have taken place in thee had taken place in Tyre and Sidon, they had long ago repented in sackcloth and 22 ashes. But I say to you, that it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in judgment-day than for you. And thou Capernaum, who hast been lifted up even to heaven, shall be brought down even to hades. For if the works of power which have taken place in thee had taken place in Sodom, it had re24 mained until this day. But I say to you, that it shall be more tolerable for [the] land of Sodom in judgment-day than for 25 thee. In that time Jesus answering said: I praise thee, bearing witness to [thy wisdom,] O Father, Lord of the heaven and

the earth, that thou hast hid these things from wise and prudent, and hast revealed 26 them to babes. Yea, O Father, for thus has 27 [it] been well-pleasing in thy sight. All things have been delivered to me by my Father, and no one knows* the Son but the Father, nor does any one know* the Father but the Son, and he to whom the Son may be pleased to reveal [him]. 28 Come to me, all ye who labour, and are burthened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am meek and lowly in heart, and ye shall find rest to your souls; 30 for my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

XII. At that time Jesus went on the Sabbath through the corn-fields; and his disciples were hungry, and began to 2 pluck the ears and to eat. But the Pharisees, seeing [it], said to him, Lo, thy disciples are doing what is not lawful 3 to do on Sabbath. But he said to them, Have you not read what David did
