to him Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, and they demanded of him, * saying: Teacher, Moses said : If any one die, not having children, his brother shall marry* his wife and shall raise up seed to 25 his brother. Now there were with us seven brethren; and the first having married died, and not having seed, left his wife 26 to his brother.

In like manner also the

second and the third, unto the seven. 27 And last of all the woman also died. 28 In the resurrection, therefore, of which

of the seven shall she be wife, for all had 20 her? And Jesus answering said to them: Ye err, not knowing the scriptures nor 30 the power of God. For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God 31 in heaven. But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read what was spoken to you by God saying: 82 I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. God is not God of [the] dead, but of [the]

33 living. And when the crowds heard it they were astonished at his doctrine. 34 But the Pharisees having heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence were 35 gathered together. And one of them, a lawyer, demanded, tempting him, and 36 saying: Teacher, which is the great com37 mandment in the law? And Jesus said to him: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy 38 soul, and with all thy mind. This is the 39 first and great commandment. And the second is like it: Thou shalt love thy 40 neighbour as thyself. On these two

commandments the whole law and the 41 prophets hang. But the pharisees being gathered together, Jesus demanded of 42 them, saying: What think ye concerning

the Christ, whose son is he? They say 43 to him: David's. He saith to them:

How then does David in Spirit call him 44 Lord, saying: The Lord said to my

Lord, Sit on my right hand, until I set thine enemies as footstool of thy 45 feet. If, therefore, David call him Lord 46 how is he his son? And no one was

able to answer him a word, nor did any one dare from that day to ask him anything any more. XXIII. Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples, saying: The scribes and the Pharisees have set down in Moses' seat; all things therefore, whatever they may tell you to keep, keep and do. But do not after their works, for they say and do not, but bind burdens heavy and hard to bear, and lay them on the shoulders of men, but will not move them with one 5 of their fingers. And all their works they do to be seen of men: for they make broad their phylacteries and enlarge the borders of their garments; ⚫ and love the chief place in feasts and the chief seats in the synagogues, and salutations in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi. But ye, be not ye called Rabbi; for one is your instructor the Christ, and all ye are • brethren. And call not [any one] your

father upon the earth; for one is your 10 Father, he who is in the heavens. Neither be called instructors;* for one is your * Or, 'guide.'

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for ye shut up the kingdom of the heavens before men; for ye do not enter, nor do ye suffer those that are 14 entering to go in. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for ye devour the houses of widows, and as a pretext make long prayers. For this reason ye shall receive more abundant judgment. 15 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for ye compass the sea and the dry land to make one proselyte, and when he is become [such], ye make him twofold more the child of gehenna 16 than yourselves. Woe to you! blind guides who say: Whosoever shall swear by the temple* it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the 17 temple,* he is a debtor. Fools and blind, for which is greater, the gold or the *Naos, the house, properly speaking.

Fools and blind, for which is greater, the gift or the altar which sanctifies the gift? 20 He therefore that swears by the altar swears by it, and by all things that are upon it. And he that swears by the temple swears by it and by him that 22 dwells in it. And he that swears by heaven swears by the throne of God and 28 by him that sits upon it. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for ye pay tithes of mint and anise, and cummin, and ye have left aside the weightier matters of the law: judgment, and mercy, and faith; these ye ought to have done and not have left the other 24 aside. Blind guides who strain out the 25 gnat, but drink down the camel. Woe

to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for ye purge the outside of the cup and of the dish, but within are full of rapine 26 and intemperance.† Blind pharisee, clean * See note preceding page.
